Rangehood not working properly? The usual signs

Rangehood not working at all

No fan, no light, nothing at the switch. It can be the switch or controls, a connection or the motor — we find which.

Fan making noise

Rattling, humming or grinding usually means a loose fan, grease throwing it off balance, or a motor that is wearing out.

Light not working

Often the globe or the light switch, sometimes the control board. We check which before anything is replaced.

Smoke and steam hang in the kitchen

Clogged filters and a greasy fan cannot pull the air out — and neither can a tired motor.

Old, greasy or noisy? We tell you whether to clean it, repair it or replace it.

  1. Rangehood roaring, but the steam just hangs there? FreshDuct explains what’s going wrong, and whether to clean it, repair it or replace it.
  2. Every time you cook, grease rises with the steam. Filters clog, grease coats the fan, and it can’t pull the air out.
  3. Then the noise starts. A rattle is often a loose fan, or grease throwing it off balance. Grinding or a loud hum usually means a worn motor.
  4. Nothing at the switch? It can be the controls, a connection or the motor. Light out? Often the globe or the switch. FreshDuct finds which.
  5. So: clean, repair or replace? Clean it if it still runs strong and quiet at every speed, and grease is the only problem.
  6. Repair it if one part has failed on a good unit: a light, a switch, a fan that’s stopped. We check it first.
  7. Replace it if it’s noisy at every speed, grease has soaked into the motor, or it still won’t clear the steam. Not sure? We tell you straight.
  8. Our licensed electricians repair it, or supply and fit a new rangehood, all major brands.
  9. Greasy but still good? We clean the hood, filters and fan, and check the ducting. Before and after photos, every job, seven days a week.

Clean or replace?

Old, greasy or noisy rangehood: clean it or replace it?

A clean removes grease. It does not fix a tired motor. Here is how to tell which one your rangehood needs — and on the day, we tell you straight.

Clean it: it still runs strong and quiet

Every speed works, the light works and the motor is quiet — grease is the only problem. A clean of the hood, filters and fan brings it back.

Repair it: one part has failed

A light, a switch or a fan that has stopped on an otherwise good unit can often be repaired. We check it before recommending anything.

Replace it: noisy at every speed

Grinding or a loud hum on an old unit usually means a worn motor. That is often the point where a new rangehood makes more sense than a repair.

Replace it: grease has soaked in

After years without a clean, grease works into the motor and housing. A clean will improve it, but it will not make an old unit run like new.

Replace it: it still won’t clear the steam

If smoke and steam hang around even with clean filters, the unit may be past its best or too weak for your cooktop.

Not sure? Ask us

We look at your rangehood and tell you which makes more sense: a clean, a repair, or a new one. If cleaning is enough, we say so.

Questions people ask before booking

Why is my rangehood not working?

Most often it is the switch or control panel, a loose connection or a failed motor. We find the cause first, then tell you whether a repair or a new rangehood makes more sense.

Why is my range hood fan making noise?

Rattling or vibration is often a loose fan or mounting, or grease build-up throwing the fan off balance — a clean sometimes quietens it. Grinding or a loud hum usually means the motor is wearing out, and on an older unit that is often when replacing makes more sense.

My rangehood light is not working — can you fix it?

Yes. It is usually the globe, the light switch or the control board. We check which, and tell you what the fix involves before we start.

How much does a rangehood replacement cost?

It depends on the rangehood and the install: the type and size of the unit, whether it is ducted or recirculating, how the ducting runs, and whether anything around it needs changing. We quote it for your job — there is no call-out fee, and you pay after the job. Call 04 3191 8137, or send a photo of your rangehood through the form.

Do you do rangehood installation in Melbourne?

Yes. We supply and install new rangehoods from all major brands — ducted or recirculating — connect them to the existing ducting, or run new ducting where it is needed.

Should I clean or replace my rangehood?

Clean it if the fan still runs strong and quiet at every speed and the light works — grease is the only problem. Replace it if the motor is noisy or weak, repairs keep coming back, or it still will not clear the steam after a clean. Not sure? We look at it and tell you straight.

Do you still do rangehood cleaning?

Yes. We clean the hood, the filters and the fan, and check the ducting. If your rangehood is in good shape, a clean is all it needs and we will tell you so. If the clean is not right, we come back and re-clean.

Who does the work?

Repairs and replacements are done by our licensed electricians. Every technician is police-checked, NDIS Worker Screening checked and covered by full public liability and business insurance.

Is there a call-out fee, and when do I pay?

There is no call-out fee. You pay after the job, once you have seen the before & after photos — cash, card or bank transfer.
