Chimney Caps & Cowls in Chadstone

Mid-century Chadstone chimneys were topped with a terracotta pot and a galvanised cap, and both are now well past their prime. FreshDuct fits rain caps, cowls, bird guards and spark arrestors sized to the flue, from the roof, with a photo of the finished job.

Cap rattling in the wind on a Chadstone roof? A loose cap is one gust from being on the lawn, and the flue open behind it.

A cap that has worked loose lets rain straight into the firebox, and one that has rusted at the mesh lets embers out over the neighbour's fence. Autumn is the time to sort either, before the heater is running every night.
Fifty-Year-Old Caps

Replacing the cap a Chadstone chimney was built with

Whoever built Chadstone's post-war homes finished most chimneys the same way, with a clay pot and a simple galvanised rain cap wired or cemented to it. It was a reasonable finish in 1960. Today the cement has cracked, the wire has rusted, and we regularly find caps that lift with a hand or have already gone. An open pot on a home that burns wood every winter is an invitation to rain, sparrows and the odd possum.

The replacement is chosen for the appliance rather than the look. An open fire gets a rain cap with a bird guard so the flue stays dry and clear. A heater fitted into the old fireplace usually terminates in its own steel flue inside the brick, which needs a cowl matched to that flue rather than a cap on the pot, and if the wrong one is on there the heater will smoke back or draw badly.

Wood heaters with trees or a neighbour's roof close by get a spark arrestor as standard, because mesh is the only thing between a hot ember and a dry gutter. Every cap and cowl is fixed with fasteners that will not rust, sealed to the pot or crown, and tested for draw with the fire lit where we can. The photo from the roof shows it seated square.

Local Know-How

Chimney Caps & Cowls in Chadstone: what is different here

Loose on the pot

Caps cemented to a clay pot sixty years ago rarely hold now. We remove what is left, clean the pot rim and fix the new cap with corrosion-resistant fasteners and sealant, so it stays put through a winter gale.

Heater flue inside the brick

Many Chadstone heaters exhaust through a steel flue run up the old chimney, which needs its own cowl at the top. We check whether the terminal matches the flue, because a cap on the pot alone leaves that flue unprotected.

Birds in the off-season

A flue that sits cold from September to May is prime nesting space. A bird guard fitted with the cap keeps the nests out, and we clear anything already in there before the cap goes on.

Measured, Then Fitted

One visit, sized on the roof

We measure the pot or flue on the roof, confirm the appliance below, and fit a cap or cowl that suits both. Where we are already up there for a sweep, it is quoted and often fitted in the same visit.

A photo of the finished terminal comes with the invoice. You see it sealed and square from above without leaving the ground, which is more than the original installer ever showed anyone.

FAQs

Chimney Caps & Cowls in Chadstone — questions answered

Do I need a spark arrestor on the wood heater in my Chadstone home?

If there are trees near the roof or a neighbour's gutter within reach of an ember, yes. A spark arrestor cowl has a mesh that keeps embers inside the flue, and we size it so it does not choke the draw. It also keeps birds out of the flue in summer.

The cap blew off our Chadstone chimney last winter. Can the old pot take a new one?

Almost always. We clean the rim of the pot, check it is not cracked, and fit a cap with a clamp or fixings rather than relying on cement. If the pot itself has split, we tell you and quote a replacement pot and cap together.

Do I really need a chimney cap?

An open flue lets rain, leaves and birds straight in. A cap keeps the flue dry, keeps nests out and, on a wood heater, a spark arrestor stops embers leaving the flue.

Why does my fireplace smoke when it is windy?

Usually a downdraught — wind pushing back down the flue. An anti-downdraught cowl is the normal fix; we confirm the draw with a test before and after.

Can you fit a cap while sweeping?

Yes. If we are on the roof for a sweep and the flue needs a cap, we can quote it on the spot and fit it the same visit where we have the right size.
