The crown is the concrete slab on top of your chimney that sheds rain away from the brickwork. When it cracks, water pours in — FreshDuct repairs or rebuilds the crown to keep the chimney dry.
Cracked crown? It’s a leading cause of chimney leaks — worth sealing early.
The crown (sometimes called the wash) is the sloped concrete slab across the top of the chimney, around the flue. Its job is to shed rain outward, away from the brickwork. Decades of weather crack and erode it — and once it cracks, water runs down into the masonry and flue instead of off the edge.
A failed crown is a classic source of the leaks people blame on the roof. FreshDuct repairs cracks and re-seals the crown, or rebuilds it where it’s too far gone, so it sheds water properly again. We check the cap and flashing at the same time, since they work together.
Crown problems rarely travel alone — the same water that gets through usually erodes the mortar joints too, so we assess the whole chimney top rather than patching one crack.
Noticing any of these? It is worth booking an inspection.

We assess how far the crown has gone. Minor cracks can be filled and sealed with a flexible, weatherproof treatment; a badly broken or crumbling crown is better rebuilt with a properly sloped, overhanging slab that throws water clear of the bricks.
Either way, the goal is a crown that sheds rain the way it should — and we document the work with photos so you can see the result up where you can’t.

The crown takes the full force of the weather, so a small crack quickly becomes a problem. Water that gets through doesn’t just sit there — it soaks into the brickwork, rusts the damper and any metal, and freezes and expands every cold Melbourne night, widening cracks from the inside.
Left long enough, a failed crown is behind leaning bricks, eroded mortar, a damp chimney breast and even flue damage. Sealing or rebuilding it early is one of the cheapest pieces of chimney protection there is — far less than the repairs that follow if it’s ignored.
The cheapest quote rarely includes inspection, containment, photo proof or proper work.
| Standard | Rushed / cheap | FreshDuct |
|---|---|---|
| Inspection | Skipped or rushed | Visual, camera or drone |
| Mess control | Soot left in the room | Drop sheets + contained vacuum |
| Root cause | Symptom only | Diagnosed & explained |
| Workmanship | Patch-ups | Done properly, to standard |
| Proof | None | Before & after photo report |
Many older crowns were poured thin, flat, or hard up against the flue with no expansion gap — so as the flue heats and cools, it works against the concrete and cracks it. Others simply weren’t sloped or didn’t overhang the brickwork, so water sat on top and seeped down rather than running clear.
Melbourne’s weather then does the rest. Rain soaks into the hairline cracks, cold nights freeze it, and the ice expands and prises the cracks wider — a slow cycle that turns a sound crown into a crumbling one over a few seasons.
That’s why a proper crown repair is about more than filling the crack. A good rebuild slopes the crown to shed water, gives it an overhang (a drip edge) so water falls clear of the bricks, and allows for movement around the flue so it doesn’t simply crack again.
It also pays to fix the crown as part of the bigger picture — a sound crown, a fitted cap and good flashing together are what keep a chimney genuinely dry, which is the single best thing you can do for its lifespan.

Often, yes. A failed crown is one of the most common entry points for water — we check it along with the cap and flashing.
The crown is the concrete slab sealing the top of the brickwork; the cap covers the flue opening itself. Both keep water out and we handle both.
It depends on whether it’s a seal-and-repair or a rebuild, and on access — we quote after inspection. Call 04 3191 8137.
A properly repaired or rebuilt crown that sheds water and allows for flue movement should last many years with normal maintenance.
