When a standard sweep isn’t enough — thick, baked-on or glazed creosote needs a deep clean. FreshDuct removes stubborn build-up, restores airflow and confirms the flue is safe, with contained vacuuming and photo proof.
Neglected fireplace or wood heater? A deep clean is the safe reset.
Over years of burning — especially with unseasoned wood or a heater run low — creosote can harden into a thick, shiny, tar-like glaze that a normal brush simply slides over. That glaze is highly flammable and restricts airflow. A FreshDuct deep clean uses heavier rotary tools to break down and remove it, then confirms the flue is clear and drawing.
Not sure if you need a sweep or a deep clean? We inspect first and tell you honestly. Learn the signs your chimney needs cleaning and how often it should be done for the way you burn.
Deep cleaning is most common in homes with an open fireplace that’s been used for years without a proper sweep, recently purchased properties with an unknown history, and wood heaters that have been run low and slow through several winters.
Noticing any of these? It is worth booking an inspection.

A standard sweep brush is designed for loose soot and light creosote — it can’t remove a hard glaze. We use rotary descaling heads that scrub the flue walls and lift baked-on creosote, working the full length of the flue rather than just the firebox.
Throughout, the work stays contained with drop sheets and high-power vacuuming, and we re-check the draught afterwards so you know the flue is genuinely clear, not just cleaner.
A heavier-duty clean for stubborn build-up:
Severe glazed creosote sometimes needs specialist treatment or points to a draw problem — if so, we’ll explain the options, including fixing the underlying draught issue.
Heavier rotary tools break down baked-on creosote a standard brush leaves behind.

A thick creosote layer is essentially fuel lining your flue. If it ignites — from a hot fire or stray ember — the result is a chimney fire that can crack the flue and spread to the home. Removing the build-up removes the fuel.
Heavy build-up also chokes airflow, which is why a neglected fireplace smokes, is hard to light and burns inefficiently. A deep clean restores the draught so the fire behaves again.
To keep build-up down afterwards, it helps to burn well-seasoned wood (see our Melbourne firewood guide) and light fires correctly — small habits that make a big difference over a season.
The cheapest quote rarely includes inspection, containment, photo proof or proper work.

Creosote is what’s left when wood smoke cools and condenses on the inside of a cooler flue. The less efficiently you burn — damp wood, a smouldering fire, a heater run low and slow — the more unburned particles there are to settle, and the faster it builds.
It forms in stages. Early on it’s a light, flaky soot a sweep removes easily. Left longer it becomes a crusty, tar-like layer, and eventually a hard, shiny glaze that’s baked onto the flue wall. That glaze is the problem: a normal brush slides straight over it, and it’s highly flammable.
A glazed flue is the classic setup for a chimney fire — the build-up ignites, burns ferociously, and can crack the flue or spread to the structure. It also chokes airflow, which is why a neglected fireplace smokes and is hard to light.
Our deep clean uses rotary descaling heads to physically break that glaze off the flue walls, restoring a clean, full-diameter flue. Burning well-seasoned wood and lighting fires properly afterwards keeps it from racing back.

A standard sweep clears regular soot and light creosote. A deep clean tackles heavy, baked-on or glazed creosote that a normal brush won’t shift. We inspect first and recommend the right one.
We remove most heavy and glazed creosote with rotary descaling tools. Very severe glaze can need specialist treatment, which we’ll advise on after inspecting.
No — we lay drop sheets, seal the opening and use contained, high-power vacuuming, leaving the room spotless.
Longer than a standard sweep — often one to two hours depending on how heavy the build-up is and the flue length and access.
More than a standard sweep because of the extra time and tools, and quoted after we see the build-up. See our cost guide or call 04 3191 8137.
Burning unseasoned or soft wood, running a heater low for long periods, and poor draught all increase creosote. Our firewood and fire-lighting guides help reduce it.
Often yes, when smoke is caused by a restricted, creosote-choked flue. If a draught or smoke-chamber issue remains, we’ll diagnose that too.
