Yearly aircon servicing, done properly

Air conditioner service in Sydney: measured, cleaned and checked before summer

A yearly service keeps a split system cooling hard through a humid Sydney summer. Our technicians measure how well it is really cooling, clean the filters, coil face and drain, and check the outdoor unit for salt, heat and wear. Any repair is quoted first.

Signs your air conditioner is overdue for a service

Any one of these is worth a call. They rarely fix themselves.

The room takes far longer to cool than it did last summer
A musty smell for the first minutes after start-up
Water marks on the wall below the indoor unit
Grey, matted filters
Salt crust, rust spots or flattened fins on the outdoor unit
An error code or flashing light you keep resetting

What a yearly service actually involves

A service is a check-up with a clean, not a strip-down. The technician first runs the system and measures it: the temperature of the air entering the indoor unit against the air leaving it, the refrigerant pressures at the outdoor unit, and the current the compressor and fans draw. Those readings show whether it is doing its job, and give you a benchmark for next year.

Then the routine work: filters washed and dried, the coil face cleaned, the drain tray checked and the drain line flushed, and the louvres, remote and every mode tested. Outside, the coil is checked for salt and leaf litter, the fan for wobble and bearing noise, and the connections and isolator for heat marks or corrosion. You get the readings, photos and a plain list of anything that needs attention.

Service or deep clean: which one you need

A service keeps a healthy system healthy: it cleans what can be reached without dismantling the unit and proves it is performing. A deep clean takes the indoor unit apart and washes the coil and barrel fan right through. If the technician lifts the cover and finds black spots through the barrel fan, or a musty smell that will not shift, that unit needs the deep clean, and our split system cleaning in Sydney page explains it. A system serviced every year rarely reaches that point; one that has sat through several humid summers usually has.

Sydney humidity and the drain line

On a sticky February afternoon a split system pulls litres of water out of a room. It condenses on the cold coil, runs into a tray and leaves through a hose often no wider than a finger. Dust and slime narrow that hose each summer until it blocks, the tray overflows and water runs down the wall.

So the drain is a fixed part of every Sydney service. We flush the line, check the fall of the hose, clean the tray and, where a condensate pump is fitted, as it often is in apartments, test the pump and its float switch. A system cooling properly also dries the air; a cool-but-clammy room is an early sign it needs attention. Our Sydney air conditioning maintenance guide covers the jobs you can do between visits.

The outdoor unit: salt, balconies and rooftops

Within a few kilometres of the ocean, salt settles on the outdoor coil and slowly corrodes the fins, fasteners and terminals. A service rinses the coil with fresh water and checks the terminals and isolator, where salt causes the faults that leave a system dead on the first hot weekend. Our coastal air conditioning guide explains why seaside units should not skip a year.

In apartments the outdoor unit is often on a screened balcony, a wall bracket or a crowded rooftop plant deck, where it can breathe its own hot exhaust. If yours is on a roof or in a plant room, ask your building manager to arrange access; the apartment air conditioning guide covers what strata buildings usually allow.

Error codes, and what a service turns up

A code on the display points to a family of causes rather than one part: a communication fault between the units, a sensor out of range, a high-pressure or overheating trip, or a drain pump float that has lifted. Note the code and the brand when you book. A service often clears the cause without any repair: a clogged filter or outdoor coil making the system overheat, or a drain backed up into the float switch.

When it finds a failed part, such as a sensor, fan motor or capacitor, the technician inspects and quotes before any work, and you approve first. Larger faults go to our air conditioner repairs in Sydney team, and a system short of refrigerant goes to our aircon regas service, where the leak is fixed before any gas goes back in.

A split system is two boxes joined by two copper lines and a drain. The refrigerant in those lines moves heat rather than making it: out of the house in summer, into the house in winter. The drain carries the condensation the indoor unit collects outside.

Straight answers

Sydney aircon service questions, answered straight

How often should an air conditioner be serviced in Sydney?

Once a year suits most homes, ideally in spring. Units near the coast, in busy rentals or running most of summer should not skip a year.

How much does an air conditioner service cost?

It depends on how many units you have and where the outdoor units sit. You get a free estimate over the phone and a firm price before any work, with no call-out fee, and you pay after the job. If a repair turns up, the technician inspects and quotes before any work, and you approve first.

What is the difference between a service and a split system clean?

A service measures performance and cleans what can be reached without dismantling the unit. A deep clean strips the indoor unit and washes the coil and barrel fan right through. Mould deep in the fan needs the deep clean; a well-kept unit needs the service.

Can I service my air conditioner myself?

Wash the filters and keep the outdoor unit clear of plants and clutter. Everything behind the front panel is for a technician: there is mains voltage inside both units and refrigerant under high pressure.

Why does my air conditioner smell musty when it starts?

Moisture from humid air sits on the coil and in the drain tray, and mould grows there. A service cleans the coil face, tray and drain, which often settles a mild smell. If the growth is deep in the barrel fan, it returns until the unit has a deep clean.

Will a service fix an error code?

Sometimes. Codes caused by overheating or a backed-up drain often clear once the filters, coil and drain are clean. If the code points to a failed sensor, motor or board, the technician inspects and quotes before any work, and you approve first.

Do you service air conditioners in apartments?

Yes. Balcony, wall-bracket and rooftop outdoor units are routine. Tell us where the unit is when you book.

Should I service before summer or before winter?

In Sydney, spring, because the cooling season is long and humid. One service a year covers both modes: heating is tested as well as cooling.

Worth knowing

The detail, for people who like detail

Aircon servicing Sydney

FreshDuct services split system air conditioners across metropolitan Sydney, 7 days a week, measured before and after, indoor and outdoor units both covered. No call-out fee, and you pay after the job.

Reverse cycle service

Most split systems are reverse cycle. The service tests both modes, so a heating fault is found in spring, not on the first cold night.
