Chimney Sweeping & Repairs in Perth

From Federation-era flues in Subiaco, Fremantle and Guildford to wood heaters across the Perth Hills, FreshDuct sweeps, camera-inspects and repairs chimneys — and shows you exactly what is inside yours.

Burning in the Hills this winter? Sweep and check the spark arrestor before the season starts.

A chimney fire starts in creosote you cannot see, in a flue nobody has looked inside. In the Perth Hills, where the bushfire interface is real, an unswept flue and a missing spark arrestor are a risk to more than one house.

Two Very Different Perth Chimney Jobs

Perth chimney work splits cleanly into two categories, and they need different things. The first is the character housing stock — the Federation and Victorian-era homes concentrated in Subiaco, Fremantle and Guildford, the last of which is among the oldest settlements in Western Australia. These homes carry original masonry flues, often built well before modern liners existed, and frequently never properly inspected in living memory.

The second is the Perth Hills, where wood heaters are in common use and the fire risk is not theoretical. The Wooroloo fire of February 2021, 45 km north-east of Perth, burnt more than 10,500 hectares, destroyed 86 homes and damaged more than 100 others. In that environment a swept flue, an intact spark arrestor and clear gutters are basic risk management rather than housekeeping.

There is an air quality dimension too. The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation identifies wood smoke as a major contributor to the winter haze that forms over Perth. A correctly swept, correctly drawing flue burns cleaner and smokes less — which matters to your own household air before it matters to anyone else’s.

What We Look For in a Perth Chimney

Sweeping is the start of the job. The inspection is what actually protects you.

Creosote and chimney fire risk

Creosote builds on the flue wall wherever combustion gases cool, and it is the fuel for a chimney fire. Slow-burning a wood heater overnight, which is common through a Perth Hills winter, produces more of it than a hot clean burn. We sweep the full flue and photograph what came out so you can see the load.

Unlined masonry flues

Character homes in Subiaco, Fremantle and Guildford often have original brick or stone flues with no modern liner. Gaps in the mortar let combustion gases into wall cavities, and a cracked flue is a fire path into the structure. We camera the flue from top to bottom and show you the footage rather than describing it.

Coastal decay on caps and flashing

On the coastal strip through Fremantle, Cottesloe and Scarborough, marine air degrades flue caps, cowls and flashings faster than inland. Rusted-out caps let water into the flue, and water in a masonry flue accelerates mortar decay from the inside. It is a small repair caught early and a rebuild caught late.

Original fireplaces put back into use

A lot of the work we do is on chimneys that were sealed for decades and are being reopened during a renovation. Those flues need a full inspection before first use — nests, debris, collapsed brickwork and previous unsafe alterations are all common, and none of them are visible from the hearth.

Spark arrestors in the fire interface

In the Hills belt a spark arrestor is not optional equipment. We check that one is fitted, intact and correctly sized, because a missing or corroded arrestor puts embers onto your roof and your neighbours’ during exactly the conditions you least want them.

Draw, smoke and flue sizing

A fireplace that smokes into the room is usually a draw problem — flue sizing, blockage, cap design or a house too well sealed to supply combustion air. We diagnose the actual cause rather than recommending you burn drier wood and hope.

How We Work

Sweep, Camera, Then an Honest Report

We sheet and seal the hearth so nothing enters the room, sweep the full length of the flue with rods and appropriate brush heads, and vacuum the debris under containment. Then we run a camera the full height and record it, because the deposit we removed tells you far less than the condition of the flue underneath.

You get a plain-English report: what condition the flue is in, whether the liner or masonry needs attention, whether the cap, cowl and flashing are sound, and whether the appliance is drawing correctly. Where we find something that needs repair we quote it separately — we do not inflate a sweep into a rebuild, and we do not stay quiet about a cracked flue.

Chimney Services Across Perth

We sweep and inspect chimneys across metropolitan Perth and up into the Hills. The character suburbs are a large part of the work — Subiaco, Fremantle, Guildford and Bassendean carry concentrations of period housing with original flues, and those jobs need a careful, heritage-aware approach rather than a fast sweep.

The Hills belt around Midland and further east is the other half. Wood heater use is common there, the burning season is concentrated, and the bushfire interface makes spark arrestors and clear gutters part of the same conversation. We are set up to handle both, and to tell you honestly which category your chimney falls into.

FAQs

Perth Chimney Questions

How often should a Perth chimney be swept?

Once a year for a regularly used wood heater or open fire, before the burning season starts. In the Perth Hills, where heaters are often run daily through winter and frequently slow-burned overnight, annual sweeping is the minimum rather than a generous interval. A flue that has been unused for years should be swept and camera-inspected before you light it again.

Do you inspect as well as sweep?

Yes, and the inspection is the more valuable half. We run a camera the full height of the flue after sweeping and record it, so you can see the actual condition of the liner or masonry rather than take our word for it. We also assess the cap, cowl, flashing and spark arrestor from the roof and report on the appliance’s draw.

Can you work on an original chimney in a Perth character home?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do in Subiaco, Fremantle, Guildford and Bassendean. Original masonry flues built without a modern liner need a careful approach — the wrong brush on decayed mortar does damage. We inspect first, choose the method to suit the flue, and report on whether lining or repointing is warranted.

Do I need a spark arrestor in the Perth Hills?

If you are burning in the Hills bushfire interface, a sound spark arrestor is basic risk management. The February 2021 Wooroloo fire burnt more than 10,500 hectares and destroyed 86 homes in that belt. We check that an arrestor is fitted, intact and correctly sized as part of every sweep, and can supply and fit one where it is missing or corroded.

Why does my fireplace smoke into the room?

It is a draw problem, and there are several possible causes: a partial blockage, an undersized or oversized flue, an unsuitable cap or cowl, or a house sealed tightly enough that the fire cannot draw combustion air. We diagnose which one applies with a camera inspection and a draw assessment rather than guessing.
