When one ducted system beats a house full of splits

Tick two or more and it is time to book — every one of these gets worse, never better, on its own.

A gas ducted heater for winter, a couple of splits for summer, and a gas bill and a power bill both climbing
Split heads on every wall of a renovated home and still no cooling in the hallway or the back bedrooms
An evaporative cooler that only works while Melbourne is dry, and a February heatwave that is not
A new build or extension with the ceiling open and no plan yet for heating and cooling
A two-storey home where upstairs is unbearable in summer and downstairs is freezing in winter
A ducted quote that never mentioned the return air, the roof pitch or the switchboard
A ducted system already in the house that runs every room at once because it was never zoned
Three installers, three different capacities, and nobody measured the rooms or looked in the roof space

Ducted refrigerated, ducted reverse cycle, ducted heating and cooling: one system, three names

Melbourne calls it refrigerated cooling, the brochures call it ducted reverse cycle, and your neighbour calls it ducted heating and cooling. It is one system. An outdoor unit on a slab beside the house, a fan coil unit hung in the roof space, insulated flexible ducts running to an outlet in the ceiling of every room, a return air grille in the hallway that pulls the air back to be treated again, and a controller on the wall. In winter the refrigerant cycle runs one way and the outlets blow warm. In summer it runs the other way and the same outlets blow cold.

That is what makes it different from the gas ducted heating so many Melbourne homes were built with. A gas heater does one job for six months and sits idle for the other six while an evaporative cooler or a pair of splits handles summer. A ducted reverse cycle system does both from one set of ducts, one outdoor unit and one power bill. Because it moves heat rather than burning fuel to make it, each unit of electricity delivers several times the heat a plug-in electric heater would.

Our ducted versus split system guide covers when a house full of splits is the better answer. For most three and four bedroom Melbourne homes with a usable roof space, ducted is.

New install or changeover: what changes in the roof

A new install is a home with nothing ducted in it: a period weatherboard heated by wall units, a renovated brick veneer with splits in two rooms, an extension with the ceiling still open. The roof space is measured for the fan coil, the duct runs are planned so no outlet is starved at the end of a long run, and the outdoor unit goes where it is quiet for you and for the neighbour.

A changeover is a home with a gas ducted heater. The heater comes out of the roof or from under the floor, the gas line is capped by a licensed gasfitter, and the fan coil goes in its place. This is the job with the Victorian Energy Upgrades discount attached, and our replace gas ducted heating page walks through the conditions.

The ducts are the honest part. The program guidance for gas-to-reverse-cycle changeovers recommends new ductwork and fittings, and we agree. Gas heating pushes very warm air through smaller ducts; reverse cycle moves more air at a gentler temperature and wants larger, better sealed runs. We inspect every duct, photograph it and tell you which can stay and which cannot. Underfloor gas ducts in a 1970s brick veneer are the runs we most often end up replacing, and we say so only after looking.

Two other paths belong here. An evaporative to refrigerated conversion takes the roof unit off and assesses the drops for reuse. Add-on cooling puts a cooling coil onto a gas heater you are keeping; it is cooling only, so no VEU discount applies.

Sizing by home and zoning by how you live

Sizing. Capacity is worked out from the floor area you want conditioned, the ceiling height, the glass and which way it faces, the insulation in the ceiling and walls, and how many rooms will run at once. A 1920s Californian bungalow with three metre ceilings and no wall insulation needs more than a 2010 estate home of the same floor area. Our ducted reverse cycle sizing guide explains the capacity bands, and our ducted reverse cycle cost guide explains what moves a quote up or down. We do not print prices on this page; the office gives you a firm figure for your house.

Zoning. A zone is a group of outlets with its own motorised damper, switched from the controller. Living areas by day, bedrooms at night, the study when someone is working from home. Most homes suit two to four zones. Running only the rooms in use is where the running cost comes down, and it is also what lets a sensibly sized unit do the job instead of an oversized one. Our zoning guide covers the controllers and the options.

Two storeys. Heat rises, so upstairs bakes in summer and downstairs freezes in winter. One well zoned system with the fan coil in the upper roof space and drops to the ground floor works for many two-storey estate homes. A large footprint or a long single-storey wing sometimes calls for two smaller systems. The office asks before anyone guesses.

Six brands we install, and how to pick between them

We install Daikin, ActronAir, Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu, Panasonic and Samsung ducted systems. Each brand page covers who the range suits, which Melbourne homes it fits and what to ask before you choose.

The honest answer to the question everyone asks: the difference between a good job and a bad one is the sizing, the ductwork and the commissioning, far more than the badge on the outdoor unit. All six make reliable inverter ducted systems. Where they differ is in the zoning controllers, the fan coil heights available for a shallow roof, the outdoor unit footprint, and how the controller feels to use every day.

What to ask. Is the unit listed for the Victorian discount if you are replacing gas? What is the manufacturer warranty, as the manufacturer prints it? What fan coil height fits your roof pitch? Which controller, and does it do zones on its own or with an add-on module? We answer all four on the call, and if you already have a brand in mind we will tell you whether it suits the house or whether something else would do the job better.

What you actually get

What a ducted reverse cycle install includes

Everything below is part of the job. Nothing becomes an extra once the office has confirmed the price.

Included as standard

  • A licensed electrician for the dedicated circuit, isolator and switchboard work
  • ARC-licensed technicians for the refrigerant pipework, the vacuum and pressure test, and the commissioning of every zone
  • The outdoor unit and fan coil in the brand you choose, sized from the floor plan and a look in the roof
  • Insulated flexible ducting, ceiling outlets and a return air grille laid out room by room
  • Zoning set up on the controller and explained before we leave
  • Existing ducts inspected and photographed, and replaced where they should be
  • Old gas heater removed and the gas line capped by a licensed gasfitter on a changeover
  • Before and after photos of the roof space, every outlet and the outdoor unit, sent to you after the job

And the things we will not do

  • Quote a capacity without a floor plan and a look in the roof space
  • Promise to reuse old ductwork we have not inspected
  • Run one zone for the whole house when the rooms are used differently
  • Commission a system without pulling a vacuum and holding a pressure test on the pipework first
  • Change the price on the day – the office confirms it before any work

Straight answers

Ducted reverse cycle questions, answered straight

Is ducted refrigerated air conditioning the same as ducted reverse cycle?

Yes. Refrigerated is the Melbourne word for cooling that uses a refrigerant cycle rather than water and pads. A ducted reverse cycle system is a refrigerated system that can also run in reverse and heat. Every ducted system we install does both, from the same ceiling outlets.

How much does a ducted reverse cycle system cost in Melbourne?

It depends on the capacity, how many outlets and zones, whether the ducts are new, how far the outdoor unit sits from the fan coil and what the switchboard needs. We do not publish prices because two houses of the same size rarely cost the same. The office gives you a free estimate over the phone and a firm price before any work.

Which is cheaper to run, ducted or split systems?

Room by room, a split can be cheaper because it only conditions the room it is in. Across a whole house, a zoned ducted system running only the zones in use is competitive and far more convenient. The honest comparison depends on how many rooms you actually use at once, which is the first question the office asks.

Can one ducted system do a two-storey house?

Often, yes, with the fan coil in the upper roof space, drops to the ground floor, and upstairs and downstairs on separate zones. Very large or unusually long homes are sometimes better served by two smaller systems. We look at the plan and the roof before recommending either.

Can my old gas ducted heating ducts be reused?

Sometimes, and we will tell you honestly. The Victorian program guidance recommends new ductwork on gas-to-reverse-cycle changeovers because reverse cycle moves more air at a lower temperature than gas. We inspect and photograph every run; sound, well sized, well sealed duct can stay, and crushed or undersized duct cannot.

Is there a Victorian discount for installing ducted reverse cycle?

There is an upfront discount under the Victorian Energy Upgrades program when a ducted reverse cycle system replaces a gas ducted heater that is still connected and is the main heating. We arrange it through our accredited installation partners and it comes off your quote. The program also has a path for a new install where nothing is removed, and the office confirms which applies to your home. Add-on cooling does not qualify.

Which is better, Daikin or Fujitsu ducted?

Both are well made inverter ducted systems and both are on our list. The right one depends on the roof space height, the zoning controller you prefer and the capacity your house needs. We install both, and we will say which suits your home rather than which we would rather sell.

How long does a ducted installation take?

A single-storey home with new ducts is usually one to two days on site. A changeover with a gas heater to remove, or a two-storey home, can run longer. The office gives you the timing when it confirms the price, and you are without heating or cooling only for the install itself.

Where does the outdoor unit go?

On a slab or bracket at ground level, on a side of the house where it is out of the way, with clear airflow around it and away from bedroom windows on both sides of the fence. Neighbourhood noise rules apply near boundaries, so placement is part of the quote, not an afterthought.

Worth knowing

Ducted reverse cycle air conditioning installation Melbourne

FreshDuct supplies and installs ducted reverse cycle air conditioning across metropolitan Melbourne, with licensed electricians for the circuit and ARC-licensed technicians for the refrigerant work and commissioning. New installs, gas ducted changeovers and evaporative conversions, sized from your floor plan and a look in the roof, quoted free over the phone, with a firm price from the office before any work and payment after the job.

Ducted refrigerated heating and cooling in one system

One outdoor unit, one fan coil in the roof space, an outlet in every room and a return air grille in the hallway. The same ducts heat in winter and cool in summer, and zones let you run only the rooms in use. It is what Melbourne means by ducted refrigerated, and it replaces both the gas heater and the evaporative cooler.

Replacing gas ducted heating with ducted reverse cycle

The changeover is the biggest job in this category. The old heater comes out, the gas line is capped by a licensed gasfitter, the ducts are inspected, photographed and replaced where they should be, and the Victorian Energy Upgrades discount is arranged through our accredited installation partners and taken off the quote up front.

Zoned ducted systems for two-storey and larger homes

Zoning is the difference between a ducted system that costs a fortune to run and one that does not. Living zones by day, bedroom zones at night, upstairs and downstairs separately in a two-storey home. We set up the zones on install day, explain the controller and photograph the finished roof space.
