Air Duct Cleaning in Adelaide

Adelaide ducts collect fine dust off the dry northern plains, summer pollen and years of settled debris. FreshDuct cleans the full system — supply runs, returns, grilles and the unit itself — and photographs every metre of it.

Ducted system smelling dusty on first start-up? That is the duct, not the unit.

A ducted system moves the entire volume of air in your house several times an hour. If the ducts are loaded with dust, that is what you are breathing — and in Adelaide, where hot northerlies carry fine dust in off the dry country, they load faster than most people expect.
Duct Cleaning in Adelaide

Why Adelaide Ducts Get Dirty Faster

Adelaide sits at the edge of a large, dry hinterland, and the SA EPA notes the city can be subjected to elevated levels of airborne dust carried in from rural areas by strong winds during dry weather. In 2024 daily average airborne particulate exceeded the national standard at several metropolitan monitoring sites during a late-May dust episode. That dust gets into roof cavities and subfloors, and from there into ductwork — particularly through return-air grilles and any joint or flexible duct connection that has worked loose over the years.

Layer onto that a long cooling season. An Adelaide ducted system may run for months at a stretch through summer, then switch to heating through the wet winter, which means the ductwork is rarely idle and rarely dry-cleaned by disuse. Where a system serves a home with pets, carpet or a renovation in its history, we routinely pull out construction dust, plaster fines and pet hair that has been circulating for a decade.

The other Adelaide-specific factor is age. A large share of the housing stock predates modern ducting standards, and retrofit ducted systems in older stone villas and cottages often run through unsealed roof spaces where dust falls directly onto the flex duct. We camera the runs, clean them mechanically, and show you the difference.

What We Check in an Adelaide Duct System

The specific things that go wrong in Adelaide ductwork, and what we do about each.

Fine plain dust loading

The dust that arrives on Adelaide’s hot northerlies is fine and it travels. We find it packed into flexible duct corrugations and sitting deep in return-air boxes, where a domestic vacuum will never reach. We use rotary brushing with negative-pressure extraction so it leaves the house rather than getting redistributed.

Return-air grilles doing the damage

Most contamination enters through the return, not the supply. In Adelaide homes the return is often a large floor or wall grille with a filter that has not been changed in years. We clean the return box and grille properly and tell you honestly what filter that system should be running.

Retrofits in older stone homes

Ducting retrofitted into a bluestone villa or 1900s cottage usually runs through an unsealed roof space or a subfloor. Dust, and sometimes rodent activity, gets straight onto the duct. We inspect for damaged or disconnected flex before cleaning — there is no point cleaning a duct that is open to the roof cavity.

Summer pollen and seasonal load

Adelaide’s spring and early summer pollen gets pulled into a running system and settles. For households with asthma or hay fever, the difference after a full clean is usually the thing they notice first — particularly in bedrooms on long supply runs.

Damp returns after a wet winter

Winter-dominant rainfall means the wettest months are also the months the system is heating. Damp in a subfloor return, or a leaking evaporative drop, can leave duct interiors humid enough to support microbial growth. Where we find it, we say so and treat it properly.

What actually improves airflow

A dirty duct costs you airflow, and lost airflow costs you running money for the same comfort. We measure and photograph rather than assert, so you can see whether the problem was the duct, the filter, a crushed flex run or the unit itself.

How We Clean

Mechanical Cleaning, Not a Vacuum Down the Vent

Proper duct cleaning means agitating the duct wall and capturing what comes off it under negative pressure, run by run. We brush and air-sweep the supply runs, clean the return boxes and grilles, and clean the unit’s blower and heat exchanger or coil — because a spotless duct feeding off a filthy fan is theatre, not a service.

You get before and after photography from inside the runs, so the result is something you can look at rather than take on trust. If we find damaged flex, a disconnected run or a return open to the roof cavity, we photograph that too and quote the repair separately rather than quietly cleaning around it.

Duct Cleaning Across Adelaide

We clean ducted heating and cooling systems right across metropolitan Adelaide — from newer estates in the northern corridor around Mawson Lakes, Salisbury and Munno Para where ducted refrigerated systems dominate, through the established eastern and inner-southern suburbs, out to the coastal west, and up into the Hills.

Housing age changes the job significantly. A ten-year-old home in Golden Grove with a well-sealed roof space is a very different clean from a retrofit system threaded through the roof of an Edwardian villa in Prospect or Unley. We quote on what your system actually is, not on a flat per-outlet rate that ignores the difference.

FAQs

Adelaide Duct Cleaning Questions

How often should Adelaide ducts be cleaned?

For most Adelaide homes, every two to three years. Bring that forward if you are on the dusty northern fringe, if anyone in the house has asthma or allergies, if you have pets, or if the home has had building work. Adelaide’s summer dust load means many homes here sit at the shorter end of that range rather than the longer one.

Does duct cleaning help with Adelaide summer dust and pollen?

Yes, substantially. Dust and pollen that has settled inside the ductwork gets re-suspended every time the system starts. Cleaning the runs, the return box and the unit removes that reservoir, which is why allergy and hay-fever sufferers usually notice the change within days — especially at the start of a run after the system has been idle.

How much does duct cleaning cost in Adelaide?

Pricing depends on the number of outlets, the system type and its condition, and whether the ducting is accessible. We quote a firm price up front after inspecting the system rather than advertising a headline rate that changes on the day. Call 04 3191 8137 for an Adelaide quote.

Can you clean ducting in an older Adelaide stone home?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do here. Retrofit ducting in bluestone villas and 1900s cottages often runs through unsealed roof spaces or subfloors, so we inspect for damaged, crushed or disconnected flexible duct first. Cleaning a run that is open to the roof cavity achieves nothing until that is repaired, and we will tell you so.

Do you clean the unit as well as the ducts?

Yes. The blower, the heat exchanger or coil and the return-air box are all part of a proper clean. A clean duct fed by a dirty fan simply re-contaminates itself, so we treat the system as one thing and photograph the unit internals along with the runs.
