“Allen provided exceptional service — friendly, professional and went above and beyond.”
FreshDuct services Nectre wood heaters and wood-fired ovens across Melbourne. Heaters that also cook are a different service job — more use, more grease, and a flue that never gets a summer off.
Cooking on it as well as heating with it? Tell us. It changes the interval we recommend.
Nectre has been making wood heaters in South Australia since 1978, when Peter Cannon built the first one in a shed behind his home. Today the company designs and manufactures in its facility at Dry Creek, and the range covers both wood heaters and wood-fired ovens. That second category is the reason this page is not the same as our other brand pages.
A wood heater used purely for heat gets lit in autumn, run through winter and left cold for six months. A Nectre used for cooking gets lit far more often, gets run hot and shut down again in short cycles, and stays in service well outside the heating season. Frequent lighting means more of the smoky, low-temperature start-up phase that lays down deposits, and short burns mean the flue spends more of its life below the temperature at which it stays clean.
Cooking also puts things into the appliance that a heating-only unit never sees. Fats and oils spatter inside an oven cavity and on a cooktop surface, carbonise, and add a sticky component to what accumulates on the flue path. That deposit behaves differently from dry soot: it holds together, it resists a brush, and it is the kind of build-up that turns into glaze if nobody addresses it.
So we scope a Nectre by how it is actually used. If it is a heater, it gets a heater service. If it cooks, we go through the oven cavity and cooktop path as well, and we usually recommend a shorter interval than the standard annual sweep because the flue simply does more work.
Facts published by the manufacturer. No model specifications we could not source.
Including the things that only turn up on an appliance that cooks.
On cooking appliances the flue deposit often has a tacky, resinous character rather than the dry powder a heating-only unit produces. It grips the flue wall and a light brushing pushes it around instead of removing it. We use the right head and the right technique for what is actually there, and we show you what came out.
On models with a baking cavity, the gas path around and above the oven box is a place build-up accumulates out of sight. We open up what is designed to be opened, clean the accessible flue path around the cavity, and report on anything we cannot reach without a level of disassembly that belongs to the manufacturer rather than a service visit.
Frequent lighting is hard on door glass. Every cold start is a period of smoky, low-airflow burning before the fire establishes, and that is when glass darkens. We clean the glass, clear the airwash channel, and talk to you about lighting technique, because on a heavily cycled appliance that makes more difference than anything we can do with a brush.
Cooking appliances have more sealed openings than a plain heater and each one has a gasket with a finite life. We test the firebox door rope and, where the model has one, the oven door seal. A leaking oven door affects cooking performance long before anyone connects it to a seal problem.
A heating-only flue gets a long dry rest each summer. A cooking flue does not, so it has less opportunity to dry out and more total operating hours per year. That is the main reason we recommend a shorter service interval on cooking use, and it is a recommendation based on operating hours rather than any manufacturer schedule.
FreshDuct recommends an annual sweep for heating-only use and, for an appliance genuinely used for cooking through the year, a service roughly every six to eight months. That is our own recommendation from what we pull out of these flues, not a published manufacturer figure.
Real FreshDuct photos of chimney and flue work. Neutral captions — no image here is presented as a specific brand of appliance.

FreshDuct sweeps the flue, strips and cleans the firebox, checks the baffle and firebricks, clears air channels, tests door and oven seals, and cleans the accessible flue path around a baking cavity where the model has one. You get photographs of the deposit before and after, and a plain note on condition.
We are independent of Nectre and we do not act as its agent. Where an appliance needs a factory part, a warranty repair, or disassembly beyond what a service visit properly covers, we say so and point you at Nectre or your original supplier instead of taking the appliance further apart than we should.
Book a Nectre ServiceWe service Nectre appliances across Melbourne and the surrounding regions. Cooking models turn up disproportionately in the semi-rural fringe — the Macedon Ranges, the Yarra Valley, the Dandenong Ranges, Warrandyte and out past Healesville — where a wood-fired oven is part of how the household actually cooks rather than a novelty.
Heating-only installations are spread right through the metropolitan area, from inner-suburban terraces in Fitzroy, Carlton and Northcote to family homes through Ringwood, Croydon, Eltham and Greensborough. We quote on what the appliance is and how hard it works, not on a flat rate per unit.
Scoped around how the appliance is actually used.
Heating only, or cooking as well? That sets the whole job.
Work area covered, extraction running before anything opens.
Right brush for the deposit, full length, debris captured.
Baffle, bricks, air channels and accessible oven flue path.
Firebox and oven door seals tested, glass cleaned and checked.
Photos, condition note and an honest interval recommendation.

Services that pair with a Nectre appliance.
Yes. We service the appliance and sweep its flue, and on models with a baking cavity we clean the accessible flue path around that cavity and test the oven door seal. Where cleaning would require disassembly beyond a normal service, we tell you rather than forcing it.
Operating hours and deposit type. A cooking appliance is lit far more often, spends more of its life in the smoky start-up phase, runs outside the heating season, and adds carbonised fats to the mix. The result is a stickier deposit accumulating over more hours per year, so FreshDuct recommends roughly every six to eight months rather than annually.
No. FreshDuct is an independent chimney and fireplace service company with no affiliation to Nectre. We clean, sweep, inspect and service the appliance and its flue. Warranty work and manufacturer parts go through Nectre or the supplier you bought from.
On a frequently cycled appliance, most glass blackening happens during cold starts, when the fire is smoky and airflow is low. If the airwash channel is partly blocked we clear it, but the bigger lever is usually how the fire is lit and how quickly it gets up to temperature. We will talk you through that on the day rather than selling you another clean.
Yes. We seal the appliance opening and work under negative pressure with extraction running so the deposit goes into our equipment rather than into the room. Floors and adjacent surfaces are covered before anything is opened. Kitchens are the last place anyone wants soot, and we work accordingly.
