“Allen provided exceptional service — friendly, professional and went above and beyond.”
FreshDuct sweeps and services Kent wood heaters across Melbourne. Convection shells, secondary air systems and ash pans all need attention that a flue-only sweep never touches.
Heater running hot but the room stays cold? On a convection unit, check the shell before blaming the fire.
The Kent brand has been sold in Australia for more than 35 years and is exclusively distributed here by Pricotech Leisure Brands, an Australian owned business based in Sydney. That distribution arrangement is worth knowing up front, because it shapes how parts and warranty work are handled: the channel runs through the distributor and its dealers, not through an independent service company like ours.
Mechanically, the Kent units we see in Melbourne homes are typically freestanding heaters built around a convection design. The firebox sits inside an outer shell with an air gap between them, room air is drawn in low, heated as it passes up that gap, and delivered back into the room warm. It is an efficient way to get heat out of a firebox and away from the appliance, and it is also a design with a specific failure mode that has nothing to do with the fire.
That gap collects things. Dust, pet hair, cobwebs and the general fallout of a room settle into the convection cavity over years, and on a heater that has never been properly serviced it can become genuinely packed. The customer experience is a heater that seems to be burning fine but no longer warms the room the way it did, and the usual response is to burn it harder, which loads the flue faster. Cleaning the convection path out is one of the more satisfying parts of servicing these units.
The other Kent-typical items are the secondary air system and the ash pan. Modern closed combustion heaters burn the smoke as well as the wood by injecting preheated air above the fuel bed, usually through a manifold or tube arrangement at the top of the firebox. Those air passages block with ash and fly debris. When they do, the clean-burn stage stops working, the glass darkens, and the flue starts collecting what should have been burnt in the firebox.

The parts of a convection heater a flue sweep on its own never reaches.
The gap between the firebox and the outer shell is the whole point of a convection heater and the thing nobody ever cleans. We open up what is designed to be opened and clear the accumulated dust, hair and debris out of the air path. On a heater that has run a decade without this, the difference in delivered heat is immediate and obvious.
Preheated secondary air injected above the fuel bed is what burns the smoke. Those passages block with ash and fly debris, and once they do the appliance quietly reverts to being a dirtier, less efficient heater. We clear them as part of the service and photograph the condition of the tubes or manifold while we have the baffle out.
A heater with an ash pan is designed to be emptied on a schedule, and an overfull pan chokes the primary air coming up through the grate. We clear the pan and the ash channel properly, check the grate for burn-through or distortion, and show you what a correct ash level for your unit actually looks like.
When the secondary air is blocked, the airwash that keeps the glass clear is usually affected too, because they are fed from related paths. Blackened glass on one of these heaters is more often an air-path problem than a fuel problem, and cleaning the passages is the fix rather than another bottle of glass cleaner.
A convection heater relies on the firebox being genuinely airtight so the air controls do what they say. We test the door rope, check that the latch pulls the door up firmly against the seal, and replace or adjust where the door has gone slack with age.
FreshDuct recommends an annual sweep and full service before the heating season. On a Kent we treat the convection cavity and secondary air clean as part of that service rather than an extra, because leaving them out means the appliance is not actually serviced.

On a Kent we sweep the flue end to end, strip the firebox, pull the baffle, clear the secondary air passages, clean out the convection cavity, empty and check the ash pan and grate, test the door rope and latch, and inspect the flue terminal from the roof where access is safe. All of it photographed and handed to you the same day.
Because Kent is distributed in Australia through a single distributor and its dealer network, warranty claims and factory replacement parts go that way, not through us. FreshDuct has no affiliation with Kent or Pricotech and does not act as an agent for either. We fit suitable service parts, name exactly what we fitted in the report, and tell you when something is properly a distributor matter.
Book a Kent ServiceWe service Kent heaters across metropolitan Melbourne and the outer ranges. Freestanding convection units are common in family homes through Ringwood, Croydon, Greensborough, Doncaster, Eltham and Berwick, where a heater was added as the main living-area heat source rather than as a feature in a period fireplace.
We also work extensively through the Dandenong Ranges, the Yarra Valley and out past Lilydale and Healesville, where these heaters run long seasons. Those are the installations where the convection cavity is worth opening up, because ten seasons of circulating room air through a gap leaves a great deal behind.

Services that commonly go with a Kent heater service.
On a convection heater that is very often the convection cavity rather than the fire. Room air is meant to circulate through a gap between the firebox and the outer shell, and years of dust, pet hair and debris in that gap reduce how much heat actually reaches the room. Clearing it is part of a proper service and the improvement is usually immediate.
No. FreshDuct is an independent chimney and fireplace service company with no affiliation to Kent or its Australian distributor, Pricotech Leisure Brands. We clean, sweep and service the appliance and its flue. Warranty claims and manufacturer-supplied parts go through the distributor or your original dealer.
They inject preheated air above the fuel bed so the smoke itself burns rather than going up the flue. When those passages block with ash, that clean-burn stage stops working. You get darker glass, less heat from the same wood, and a flue that loads faster. Clearing them is part of every service we do on these units.
Often enough that ash never chokes the air coming up through the grate, which for most households burning daily means every few days rather than weekly. A small bed of ash in the firebox itself is helpful, but a full pan is not. We will show you what the right level looks like on your particular unit when we service it.
We fit suitable service parts such as rope gasket and ceramic door glass, and we tell you exactly what we have used. We do not claim to supply genuine branded spares. Where a model needs a specific factory component, that comes through the Australian distributor or a Kent dealer, and we will tell you that rather than improvising.
