“Allen provided exceptional service — friendly, professional and went above and beyond.”
FreshDuct services Norseman wood heaters across Melbourne and the ranges, and diagnoses the wind-driven draught problems that plague heaters on exposed and hillside sites.
Fire only smokes when the wind is up? That is a terminal and siting problem, not a dirty flue.
Norseman is an established brand in the Australian wood heater market, with freestanding glass-fronted models such as the Silhouette GL and a well-supported spare parts position covering items like baffles and glass retainers. The appliances themselves are conventional closed combustion heaters and we service them conventionally.
What earns a page of its own is where a great many of them are installed. Melbourne’s wood heater belt runs through the hills — the Dandenong Ranges, the Macedon Ranges, the Yarra Valley, Warrandyte, Eltham and Healesville — and hillside sites with mature trees are where wind-driven draught problems are most common and most misdiagnosed.
The physics is straightforward. A flue draws because the hot column of gas inside it is lighter than the outside air, producing a small pressure difference. That difference is not large, and anything that raises pressure at the top of the flue can overcome it. Wind spilling over a ridge, deflecting off a steep roof, or rolling off a tall stand of trees creates exactly that kind of local high-pressure zone, and the result is smoke pushed back down into the room.
The tell is the pattern. A dirty or restricted flue smokes consistently and gets steadily worse through the season. A wind problem is intermittent: fine on still days, bad on windy ones, often worse from one particular wind direction. Customers usually book a sweep for it, and a sweep does not fix it. We ask about the pattern before we quote, because the honest answer is often a terminal change rather than a cleaning job.
Publicly verifiable facts only. No model specifications we could not source.
The standard service, plus the draught problems these installations actually have.
A flue must terminate above the zone of turbulent, pressurised air that forms around a roof. On a steep hillside roof, or where the flue exits low on the slope, that zone extends further than people expect. We assess the termination height and its position relative to the ridge from the roof where access is safe.
Not all cowls behave the same in wind. A plain terminal in an exposed position is far more susceptible to downdraft than an anti-downdraft cowl designed to use crosswind to assist draught rather than oppose it. Where the fault pattern points to wind, changing the terminal is usually the effective fix rather than another sweep.
A tall stand of eucalypts upwind, a rising slope behind the house, or a two-storey extension added next to a single-storey section all change the airflow over the roof. We look at what is actually around the flue, because these are the causes a sweep will never address and which get blamed on the appliance for years.
A modern, well-sealed house can simply fail to supply the air a heater needs, and the flue ends up drawing backwards down another opening. If the fire improves when a window is cracked open, that is the diagnosis. It is a common and often overlooked cause, and it has nothing to do with the flue being dirty.
Unchanged and done properly: flue swept end to end, firebox stripped, baffle out and inspected, firebricks checked, air channels cleared, door rope tested and replaced where needed, glass and retainers checked. Norseman parts availability for these items is generally good.
FreshDuct recommends an annual sweep and service before the season. On hillside sites we also check the terminal each visit, because falling bark, leaf litter and nesting material accumulate faster in treed locations than they do in open suburbs.

When a Norseman smokes, we establish the pattern before we quote anything. Consistent and worsening points at the flue and the appliance. Intermittent and wind-linked points at the terminal, its height, or the terrain and trees around the house. Improved by opening a window points at room air supply. Those are four different jobs at four different prices.
We service the appliance and sweep the flue regardless, because that needs doing. But we will not sell you a second sweep for a problem a sweep cannot fix. FreshDuct has no affiliation with Norseman and is not its agent or repairer; warranty work and manufacturer-supplied parts go through the brand or your dealer.
Book a Norseman ServiceWe service Norseman heaters across metropolitan Melbourne, and a large share of our work on these units is in the hills: the Dandenong Ranges, the Macedon Ranges, the Yarra Valley, Warrandyte, Eltham, Healesville and out past Lilydale and Gisborne.
Those are the sites where terrain, tree cover and steep roof forms combine, and where a heater that has “never drawn properly” has often been misdiagnosed as dirty for years. We treat the terminal and its surroundings as part of the system rather than an afterthought, because on these sites it frequently is the problem.
Service the appliance, and actually diagnose the draught.
Constant or wind-linked? Better with a window open? That is the diagnosis.
Floor and hearth covered, extraction running before we open it.
Full length swept, restriction and blockage ruled in or out.
Baffle out, bricks checked, air paths cleared, rope tested.
Height, position, cowl type and surrounding terrain and trees.
Whether that is a sweep, a cowl change or an air supply solution.

What a draught problem usually turns into.
Almost certainly not. Wind-linked smoking is a pressure problem at the top of the flue, not a blockage inside it. A sweep is still worth doing to rule restriction out, but the fix is usually a change of terminal, additional flue height, or addressing what is deflecting wind over the roof. We will tell you that before taking your money for a second sweep.
It is a terminal designed so that crosswind assists the flue rather than pressurising it. On exposed and hillside sites they are frequently effective where a plain terminal is not. They are not a universal cure, and we will assess whether your problem is actually a terminal problem before recommending one.
It means the house is not supplying enough air for the appliance to draw properly. Well-sealed modern homes, and homes with strong exhaust fans or a range hood running, can starve a heater of air. The fix is a dedicated air supply rather than living with an open window, and it has nothing to do with the flue being dirty.
No. FreshDuct is an independent chimney and fireplace service company with no affiliation to Norseman or its suppliers. We clean, sweep, inspect, diagnose and service the appliance and its flue. Warranty work and manufacturer parts go through the brand or your dealer.
Yes. Falling bark, leaf litter and nesting material accumulate on and around a terminal far faster on a treed block than in an open suburb, and a partly obstructed terminal makes any existing draught weakness much worse. We check the terminal on every visit in the ranges as a matter of course.
