Escea gas fireplaces are modern, architecturally styled appliances and all models are zero clearance. That designation matters: a zero-clearance appliance is designed and tested to be installed directly against a framed structure, which is what allows these fireplaces to sit flush in a plaster or stone feature wall with no masonry chimney at all.
The flue architecture is fundamentally different from anything else on this site. These are sealed appliances: the firebox is closed behind fixed glass, combustion air is drawn from outside rather than from the room, and exhaust is discharged outside through a dedicated flue assembly. Nothing about the combustion process is shared with the living space, which is a genuinely safer arrangement than an open-fronted fire in an old chimney.
It also means the flue must never be treated like a chimney. There is no soot to sweep, and putting a brush into one of these systems risks damaging seals, joints and the concentric arrangement that keeps intake and exhaust separated. If anyone proposes sweeping a sealed balanced-flue gas fireplace, that is the point to stop the conversation. The correct intervention is inspection, not cleaning.
What the flue does need is verification that it remains intact, correctly assembled, properly supported, unobstructed at the terminal and clear of any deterioration in the concealed run. Because the whole assembly is usually hidden inside a framed chase, that inspection depends entirely on the access designed into the installation — which is why we scope access before we quote.

The flue assembly keeps intake and exhaust separated along its whole length. We verify that it is intact, correctly assembled and properly supported wherever the installation gives us access. A separated or poorly assembled joint on this kind of system is a combustion products issue, not a performance one.
The external terminal is the one part of the system that is always accessible and always exposed to weather, debris and occasionally nesting attempts. We inspect it from the roof or wall externally where access is safe and check it is clear, undamaged and correctly positioned.
These systems produce no soot and are not designed to be brushed. Introducing sweeping equipment risks damaging seals and joints and compromising the separation between intake and exhaust. We inspect rather than clean, and we will decline to sweep a sealed system no matter who has asked for it.
A zero-clearance unit typically sits in a framed and clad chase with the flue concealed inside it. Whether the run can be inspected at all depends on the access provided at build stage. We establish that before quoting and document exactly what was and was not accessible.
Burner, injector, ignition, gas control and the sealed glass assembly and its gasket are appliance components. Servicing them is licensed gasfitting work under Energy Safe Victoria and FreshDuct does not perform it. The glass gasket in particular is integral to the sealed operation and belongs to a licensed gasfitter.
FreshDuct recommends an annual flue inspection alongside the appliance service a licensed gasfitter should be carrying out. Sealed systems are reliable, but “reliable” is a reason to verify them on a schedule rather than a reason to never look.
