Insulation has no expiry date printed on it, and that is genuinely confusing for homeowners trying to work out whether theirs is doing anything. The end of winter is the right moment to ask, because you have just spent several months with direct evidence of how well your ceiling holds heat in.
Quick answer: Good quality ceiling insulation that has been left undisturbed can keep performing for decades, so the useful question is not its age but its condition. What ends its working life in most Melbourne homes is settling, compression, gaps opened up by trades working in the roof space, and moisture — all of which are visible on inspection.
Insulation Does Not Expire, It Degrades
Bulk insulation works by trapping still air. Glasswool, polyester and rockwool batts all do the same basic thing: they hold a thick layer of air in place so that heat cannot move through it easily.
