“Allen provided exceptional service — friendly, professional and went above and beyond.”
FreshDuct cleans and services Lopi fireplaces across Melbourne — freestanding slow combustion heaters, large-format wood fireplaces and the flue systems behind gas models.
Large-format firebox in a feature wall? Access is the first thing we scope, not the last.
Lopi supplies a broad range in Australia covering traditional gas log fires, freestanding slow-combustion wood heaters, and gas and wood fireplaces. The wood units we service most often in Melbourne are the larger-format fireplaces, and they raise a practical issue that rarely gets discussed before installation: how anyone is going to service them afterwards.
A large fireplace built into a feature wall is a beautiful thing and a genuinely awkward appliance to maintain. The flue runs up inside a framed and clad chase rather than as an exposed pipe. The appliance sits behind a fixed surround of stone, tile or plaster. The flue connection, the seal around the unit and the space behind it are all concealed. If no access was designed in, the only way to inspect any of it is to disturb the finish.
That is not a reason to avoid these appliances, and we are not suggesting it is. It is a reason to establish access before the wall goes up, and a reason for us to scope the job honestly before we arrive with a brush. On a well-designed installation with a service panel or an accessible chase, servicing one of these is straightforward. On a sealed installation, we will tell you up front what we can and cannot reach.
The appliances themselves are modern clean-burn units and the firebox service is conventional: baffle out, secondary air passages cleared, firebricks and insulation checked, airwash cleaned, door rope and glass tested. The large glass areas these units are built around make airwash performance particularly visible, so it is worth doing properly.
Manufacturer published facts only. No model specifications we could not source.
The appliance, and whether anyone can actually get to it.
On a built-in fireplace the flue runs inside a framed chase. We establish before quoting whether there is an access panel, whether the chase can be reached from a roof space, or whether the run is fully concealed. That determines what we can inspect and it is the honest thing to sort out before we arrive rather than after.
Where a firebox meets its surround there is a seal that stops room air and combustion products moving between the appliance and the wall cavity. On a fully finished installation this is often invisible. Where we can access it we check it, and where we cannot we say so explicitly rather than implying we have inspected it.
Larger fireboxes carry larger baffle and secondary air assemblies, and there is correspondingly more surface for ash to accumulate on. We remove the assembly, clear the passages, inspect any insulation blanket, and photograph the condition before reassembly.
These appliances are built around their glass, so any airwash weakness is immediately visible. We clear the full channel and check that the door closes squarely, because on a large door a slight misalignment produces a very obvious dirty band at one end.
On Lopi gas fireplaces, FreshDuct cleans and inspects the flue system and the non-gas serviceable components. Work on the gas-carrying parts is a licensed trade in Victoria under Energy Safe Victoria and must be carried out by a licensed gasfitter, so we scope that portion accordingly rather than doing it.
FreshDuct recommends an annual sweep and service before the season. On built-in installations we would add that the first service is worth booking early, so that any access limitation is discovered in autumn rather than when you actually need the appliance working.

On a Lopi wood appliance we sweep the flue as far as the installation allows, strip the firebox, remove and clear the baffle and secondary air assembly, inspect firebricks and insulation, clear the airwash, test the door rope and glass gasket, and inspect the terminal from the roof where access is safe.
Where an installation genuinely limits what can be inspected, we document that limitation in the report rather than quietly omitting it. A service report that implies a full inspection when half the system was inaccessible is worse than useless. FreshDuct has no affiliation with Lopi or its dealers; warranty work and manufacturer-supplied parts go through them.
Book a Lopi ServiceWe service Lopi fireplaces across metropolitan Melbourne, most commonly in renovated and architect-designed homes through Camberwell, Balwyn, Kew, Hawthorn, Malvern, Brighton, Williamstown and Doncaster, where a large-format fireplace has been built into a feature wall as part of a living-area redesign.
Freestanding models are more common through Eltham, Warrandyte, Ringwood, the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges. Those are considerably easier to service properly, because the flue is exposed and the appliance can be reached from every side.
Scope the access first, then service what is reachable, and say so.
Built-in or freestanding, and what can actually be reached.
Feature walls and stonework covered before anything is opened.
Swept as far as the installation allows, with limits documented.
Baffle and secondary air assembly out, passages cleared.
Channels cleared, door rope and glass gasket tested.

What a built-in fireplace installation usually needs.
We can service the firebox and sweep the flue from the appliance, and we can inspect the terminal from the roof. What we cannot do is inspect a concealed flue chase or the appliance seal behind a fixed surround. We will tell you exactly what was and was not accessible and put it in the report rather than implying a full inspection.
Yes, and it costs almost nothing at construction stage. An access panel into the flue chase, or a chase reachable from the roof space, means the installation can be properly inspected for its whole life. Retrofitting access into a finished stone or tiled feature wall is a substantially more expensive exercise.
No. FreshDuct is an independent chimney and fireplace service company with no affiliation to Lopi or its dealers. We clean, sweep, inspect and service the appliance and its flue. Warranty work and manufacturer parts go through Lopi or your dealer.
We clean and inspect the flue system and the non-gas serviceable components. In Victoria the gas-carrying parts of an appliance may only legally be worked on by a licensed gasfitter under Energy Safe Victoria, so that portion is scoped to a licensed gasfitter. We will always be clear about which parts of the job are ours.
On a large door that is nearly always an airwash problem on that side: a partly blocked channel, or a door not closing quite square so the air curtain is uneven across the glass. It is a service item rather than a fault you have to live with, and clearing the channel usually resolves it completely.
Large-format fireboxes serviced properly, with honest documentation of anything the installation prevented us from reaching.
