“Allen provided exceptional service — friendly, professional and went above and beyond.”
FreshDuct services Masport wood fires across Melbourne — including the heat-retaining hearth installations where the masonry around the appliance is doing as much work as the firebox.
Heater on a solid masonry hearth? The hearth and surround need checking too, not just the fire.
Masport makes indoor wood fires designed for Australian homes, and the brand describes models such as the R1500 in terms of heat retention: the hearth and the heater hold warmth for hours after the fire has died down. That design intent is the useful thing to know before servicing one, because it means the masonry is not decoration. It is part of how the appliance delivers heat, and it belongs in the service.
A radiant heater on a substantial hearth works differently from a convection unit in a sheet metal shell. Radiant heat comes off the firebox and the hot mass around it directly, warming surfaces and people rather than circulating air. It is a comfortable, slow, even heat, and it depends on the mass staying intact, dry and in good condition. A cracked hearth, a failed mortar joint in the surround, or damp wicking up into the masonry all degrade it.
So on a Masport we look at more than the firebox. We check the hearth for cracking and movement, look at the surround and any masonry the appliance sits against, and check the clearances between the hot appliance and anything combustible nearby. Heat-retaining installations often sit inside a built surround, and built surrounds are where we most often find timber closer to a heat source than it should be.
Masport also produces inbuilt models that fit into an opening behind a decorative fascia. Those need the fascia removed for real service access, and removing it is the only way to see the appliance seal, the flue connection and the state of the cavity behind. A service that stops at the front of the fascia has looked at almost nothing.
Manufacturer published facts only. No model specifications we could not source.
The appliance, the flue, and the masonry that is doing half the work.
A hearth that heats and cools every day for years will eventually show it. We look for cracking, lifted or drummy tiles, failed mortar joints and any sign the slab has moved. Small cracks are usually cosmetic; cracks that open a path down to a combustible floor structure are not, and we will tell you which one you have.
Heat-retaining installations are often built into a masonry or framed surround, and framed surrounds contain timber. We check the actual distance from the hot appliance and its flue to any combustible framing, mantel or shelf, and photograph anything that looks marginal or shows heat discolouration.
On an inbuilt Masport the decorative fascia has to come off to see anything that matters: the appliance-to-flue connection, the seal around the unit, and the condition of the cavity behind. We remove and refit it as part of the service rather than working around it and calling that an inspection.
Radiant designs run the firebox hot, which is good for clean burning and hard on consumables. We pull the baffle, check it for distortion, inspect the firebricks for cracking and burn-through, and report honestly on whether they will see out another season.
Hot fireboxes cook rope gasket harder and faster. We test the seal all the way round, replace it where it has carbonised or flattened, and check the glass and its retaining clips, which also suffer on units run at high temperature.
FreshDuct recommends an annual sweep and service before the season. Heat-retaining installations tend to be run hot rather than shut down, which is actually kinder to the flue than overnight smouldering, so many of these units genuinely do well on a single annual service.

On a Masport we sweep the flue, strip and clean the firebox, pull and inspect the baffle and firebricks, test and replace door rope, check the glass and its retainers, remove and refit the fascia on inbuilt models, and inspect the hearth, surround and clearances. Everything is photographed and reported the same day.
FreshDuct is independent of Masport and is not its agent, dealer or authorised repairer. Warranty work and manufacturer-supplied parts go through Masport or the dealer you bought from. Where the hearth or surrounding masonry needs actual repair, that is chimney and masonry work we do in our own right, quoted separately and honestly.
Book a Masport ServiceWe service Masport wood fires throughout Melbourne. Heat-retaining hearth installations are common in the larger homes of the eastern and outer-eastern suburbs — Balwyn, Camberwell, Doncaster, Ringwood, Croydon and Mount Waverley — where there was room to build a proper hearth and surround around the appliance.
Further out through Eltham, Warrandyte, the Dandenong Ranges, the Yarra Valley and the Macedon Ranges, these units are frequently the primary heat source in homes with real winter exposure. Those are also the homes where the surround has often been built by the owner, which is exactly why we check clearances rather than assume them.
The full installation, not just the box the fire is in.
Hearth, surround, clearances and flue route assessed first.
Fascia removed on inbuilt models so the real connections are visible.
Full length, mechanically, with debris captured at the appliance.
Baffle out, bricks inspected, ash cleared, air paths opened.
Rope tested and replaced, glass and retaining clips checked.
Fascia refitted, photos and a written condition note handed over.

What a Masport installation often needs alongside the service.
Yes, on every service where it is removable. The fascia hides the appliance-to-flue connection, the seal around the unit and the cavity behind it, which is to say everything worth inspecting. We remove it, service and inspect properly, then refit it. A service that never gets behind the fascia has not really inspected the appliance.
Usually not on its own. Masonry that heats and cools daily will craze and hairline crack, and most of it is cosmetic. What matters is whether a crack has opened a continuous path through to a combustible floor structure below, or whether the slab has actually moved. We assess that specifically and photograph it either way, rather than guessing from the surface.
No. FreshDuct is an independent chimney and fireplace service company with no affiliation to Masport or its distributors. We clean, sweep, inspect and service the appliance, its flue and the masonry around it. Warranty work and manufacturer-supplied parts go through Masport or your dealer.
Sometimes, and the reason is how it is run rather than what it is. Heat-retaining designs are typically burnt hot rather than shut down overnight, and hot clean burning lays down far less deposit than long smouldering does. We still recommend an annual sweep, but many of these units genuinely need nothing more than that.
Yes. Masonry repair, repointing, hearth work and chimney repairs are services we provide in our own right, separate from the appliance service and quoted separately. If we find the surround or hearth needs work while servicing your heater, we will photograph it and give you a straight price rather than bundling it in unannounced.
