Chimney Damper Repair in Melbourne — Seal & Save Heat.

A stuck, rusted or missing damper wastes heat, lets weather in and can be a smoke and safety problem. FreshDuct frees, repairs or replaces dampers so your fireplace seals and operates as it should.

Damper won’t open or close? It’s an easy thing to put right.

A damper that won’t seal lets your heated (or cooled) air escape straight up the chimney year-round — and one that won’t open is a genuine hazard if a fire is lit.

The Valve That Controls Your Chimney

The damper is the metal plate in the throat above the firebox that opens to let smoke out when you’re burning, and closes to seal the chimney when you’re not. Over years it rusts, warps or seizes — so it won’t fully open (smoke risk) or won’t fully close (heat loss and draughts). FreshDuct frees, repairs or replaces it.

A working damper matters more than people think. Left open between uses, it’s an open hole to the outside, letting warm air out in winter and hot air in over summer. A modern top-sealing damper can seal far better than an old throat damper if yours is past saving — we’ll advise. See our guide to damper types and repair.

A seized damper also often comes with creosote and rust from water getting in — so it’s worth checking the cap and giving the flue a sweep at the same time.

Warning Signs

Signs to Watch For

Noticing any of these? It is worth booking an inspection.

Damper won’t open or close
Stiff, rusted or noisy handle
Draught even when “closed”
Higher heating / cooling bills
Rust or debris in the firebox
Whistling or cold air down the flue
A repaired or replaced chimney damper that seals properly
Our Approach

Free It, Fix It, or Fit a Better One

We start by freeing and cleaning a seized damper where the mechanism is sound — often that’s all it needs. Where the plate is warped, rusted through or missing, we repair or replace it, and where sealing is poor, a modern top-sealing damper can do a far better job.

Then we check it opens and closes cleanly and actually seals, so you stop losing conditioned air and the fireplace is safe to use.

Why It Matters

An Open Damper Is an Open Window

When a damper won’t close, your chimney becomes a permanent vent — warm air escapes up it all winter and hot summer air pours down, so your heating and cooling work harder for no benefit. A sealing damper quietly saves energy year-round.

When a damper won’t open, it’s a safety issue: lighting a fire with a closed or jammed damper sends smoke straight into the room. Either way, a damper that doesn’t do its one job properly is worth fixing — it’s usually a small, satisfying repair.

Why It Matters

A Rushed Job vs the FreshDuct Standard

The cheapest quote rarely includes inspection, containment, photo proof or proper work.

Standard Rushed / cheap FreshDuct
Inspection Skipped or rushed Visual, camera or drone
Mess control Soot left in the room Drop sheets + contained vacuum
Root cause Symptom only Diagnosed & explained
Workmanship Patch-ups Done properly, to standard
Proof None Before & after photo report
Types & Options

Throat Dampers, Top-Sealing Dampers and When to Upgrade

There are two main kinds. A throat damper is the traditional metal plate just above the firebox — the one most older Melbourne fireplaces have. It’s simple, but the metal-on-metal seal is never airtight and rusts and warps over the years, which is why so many leak air even when “shut”.

A top-sealing damper sits at the very top of the flue and closes with a rubber gasket, sealing far more tightly. It’s operated by a cable from the firebox, and as a bonus it caps the flue when closed — keeping rain and birds out like a cap does.

Which is right depends on your chimney and what’s wrong. If your throat damper is simply seized but sound, freeing and cleaning it is the quick, economical fix. If it’s warped, rusted through or missing, replacing it — or upgrading to a top-sealing damper for better efficiency — usually makes more sense than nursing a failing plate.

We’ll show you the condition with photos and explain the options plainly, so you can choose between a straightforward repair and a longer-term upgrade. Our damper guide covers the detail.

FAQs

Common Questions

My chimney damper is stuck — can you fix it?

Usually, yes. A seized but sound damper can often be freed and cleaned; a warped, rusted or missing one we repair or replace.

Why does a damper matter?

It seals the chimney when you’re not burning, saving heated and cooled air, and opens to vent smoke when you are. A failed one wastes energy or risks smoke.

What is a top-sealing damper?

A damper at the top of the flue that closes with a gasket for a much tighter seal, and caps the flue against rain and birds. A good upgrade if the old one is failing. See our guide.

Can a damper cause my fireplace to smoke?

Yes — if it won’t open fully it restricts venting and pushes smoke back. We make sure it opens cleanly.

Will a sealing damper save me money?

A damper that closes properly stops heated and cooled air escaping up the chimney year-round, which helps your energy bills.

How much does damper repair cost?

Freeing a damper is a smaller job than replacing one; we quote after inspecting. Call 04 3191 8137.
