Chimney Waterproofing in Melbourne — Keep Water Out.

Brick and mortar are porous — they soak up rain, which then rots, rusts and freezes inside the chimney. FreshDuct waterproofs Melbourne chimneys with a breathable sealer that repels water while letting the masonry breathe.

Damp chimney breast or spalling bricks? Waterproofing helps stop the cause.

Water is the number-one enemy of a masonry chimney. Sealing porous brickwork is a low-cost, preventative job that heads off spalling, leaks and freeze damage.

Stop the Brickwork Drinking the Rain

People assume brick is waterproof — it isn’t. Brick and mortar are porous and soak up rain like a sponge, especially on an exposed rooftop chimney hit from every side. That absorbed water then rots the structure, rusts metal parts, feeds damp on the chimney breast, and freezes on cold nights to spall (flake) the brick faces and crack the masonry.

A breathable masonry sealer changes that: it repels water from the surface so rain runs off, while still letting moisture inside the masonry escape as vapour — so you don’t trap damp in. It’s a smart finishing step after repointing or brick repair, and a good preventative measure on a sound but exposed chimney.

Waterproofing isn’t a substitute for fixing active leaks — a cracked crown or failed flashing still needs repairing — but on porous masonry it’s one of the cheapest ways to slow decay.

Our Approach

Breathable Sealing, Not a Plastic Coat

We use a breathable, water-repellent masonry treatment — not a film-forming paint or sealer that traps moisture and causes spalling. It lets the chimney shed rain from the surface while still allowing any internal moisture to escape as vapour.

We check first that there’s no active leak to fix, prepare the surface, and apply the treatment evenly — with photos so you can see the coverage up top.

What’s Included

What Waterproofing Involves

Protecting porous masonry the right way:

Assess masonry & rule out active leaks
Repoint open joints first if needed
Surface preparation
Breathable water-repellent treatment
Even, thorough coverage
Before & after photos

If there’s an active leak from the crown, cap or flashing, we fix that first — sealing over a leak just traps the problem.

Why It Matters

Porous Brick Is a Slow Leak

Even without an obvious crack, a porous chimney is slowly soaking up water with every rain. That moisture is what drives the most common chimney decay — spalling brick faces, eroding mortar, a perpetually damp chimney breast, and the freeze-thaw cracking that pulls masonry apart over winters.

Sealing porous brick with a breathable repellent slows all of that down for a modest cost. On older and exposed Melbourne chimneys it’s one of the highest-value preventative jobs — cheaper than the repointing and brick repairs that water damage eventually demands.

Why It Matters

A Rushed Job vs the FreshDuct Standard

The cheapest quote rarely includes inspection, containment, photo proof or proper work.

Standard Rushed / cheap FreshDuct
Inspection Skipped or rushed Visual, camera or drone
Mess control Soot left in the room Drop sheets + contained vacuum
Root cause Symptom only Diagnosed & explained
Workmanship Patch-ups Done properly, to standard
Proof None Before & after photo report
Done Right

Why “Breathable” Is the Word That Matters

The single most important thing about chimney waterproofing is using the right product. A breathable water-repellent penetrates the surface and makes it shed rain, but still lets moisture vapour escape from inside the masonry. That balance is what protects the brick without causing new problems.

The wrong approach — a film-forming sealer or, worse, paint — traps moisture inside the masonry. On the next cold snap that trapped water freezes, expands, and blows the brick faces off (spalling) faster than no treatment at all. It’s a classic case of a well-meaning job doing harm.

Preparation and timing matter too. Sealing should go onto sound, dry masonry, after any open joints are repointed and any active leak is fixed — otherwise you’re just locking moisture in. We check all of that before we treat anything.

Used correctly, on the right chimney, a breathable sealer is a genuinely smart, low-cost layer of protection. It won’t fix a structural leak, but on porous, weather-exposed brickwork it meaningfully slows the decay that water causes — see our waterproofing and leak-prevention guide for the full picture.

FAQs

Common Questions

Isn’t brick already waterproof?

No — brick and mortar are porous and absorb rain, especially on an exposed chimney. A breathable sealer makes the surface repel water.

Will waterproofing stop my chimney leaking?

It stops porous masonry soaking up rain, but it won’t fix an active leak from a cracked crown, cap or flashing — those we repair first.

Can you paint a chimney to waterproof it?

No — paint and film-forming sealers trap moisture and cause spalling. We use a breathable repellent that lets the masonry breathe.

When is the best time to waterproof a chimney?

After any repointing or brick repair, on dry masonry, and ideally before winter — so the chimney goes into the wet season protected.

How long does chimney waterproofing last?

A quality breathable treatment typically protects for several years before it benefits from reapplication, depending on exposure.

How much does chimney waterproofing cost?

It depends on the chimney size and access, and is quoted after inspection. Call 04 3191 8137.
