Melbourne Restoration & Rebuilds

From Tired to Sound — or From the Ground Up

When a chimney has been neglected, the faults compound — eroded mortar, spalling bricks, a cracked crown, a missing cap and a tired flue all at once. A restoration addresses the whole stack together, so it’s structurally sound, weather-tight and looking right rather than patched in one spot.

Where a chimney is leaning, the brickwork has lost its bond, or it’s crumbling beyond repair, a partial or full rebuild is the safe answer — and the chance to build in a sloped crown, a fitted cap, correct flashing and a sound flue from the start.

On Melbourne’s many period homes, both are done sympathetically — matching brick, bond and detail so the chimney keeps the character of the house while being made safe.

Our Approach

Assess Honestly, Restore or Rebuild

Every job starts with a full structural and safety assessment, so we know whether the chimney can be restored or genuinely needs rebuilding — and how much. We never over-quote a rebuild where a restoration is safe, or patch a stack that isn’t.

We then restore or rebuild as needed, matching materials on period homes, building in durability, and working safely with scaffolded access — all documented with photos.

Restoration & Rebuilds

What We Restore & Rebuild

Whole-chimney work, done properly:

Full structural assessment
Sympathetic chimney restoration
Partial chimney rebuild
Full chimney rebuild
Matched heritage brickwork
Crown, cap, flashing & flue built in

If the chimney is structurally sound and only weather-damaged, simpler repairs may be all it needs — we always recommend the lesser job where it’s safe.

Why It Matters

A Failing Chimney Is a Real Hazard

A chimney is a heavy column of masonry high on your roof. When it leans or the brickwork loses its bond, that weight becomes a hazard — bricks can fall and, in the worst case, a section can collapse onto the roof. It’s not a fault to live with.

Restoring or rebuilding removes that risk and resets the clock: a properly restored or rebuilt chimney, with a sloped crown, cap and correct flashing, is far more durable than the failing one it replaces — and protects the flue, firebox and roof below.

Why It Matters

A Rushed Job vs the FreshDuct Standard

The cheapest quote rarely includes inspection, containment, photo proof or proper work.

Standard Rushed / cheap FreshDuct
Inspection Skipped or rushed Visual, camera or drone
Mess control Soot left in the room Drop sheets + contained vacuum
Root cause Symptom only Diagnosed & explained
Workmanship Patch-ups Done properly, to standard
Proof None Before & after photo report

How We Decide What a Tired Chimney Needs

The deciding factor is structural soundness. If the stack is fundamentally stable and the problems are surface and weather damage — eroded mortar, spalled bricks, a cracked crown, a missing cap — a restoration is usually the right, more economical path. If it’s leaning, the brickwork has lost its bond over large areas, or it has moved, restoration just delays the inevitable and a rebuild is safer and better value.

Even a rebuild often isn’t the whole chimney. The section above the roofline is the most exposed and usually the first to fail, while the masonry inside the roof remains sound — so a partial rebuild from a solid base restores safety for a fraction of a full rebuild’s cost. Our assessment works out exactly how far the failure goes.

When we do rebuild, we build in the durability the original often lacked: a crown that’s sloped and overhangs to shed water, a fitted cap, correct flashing and a sound flue. The new stack should comfortably outlast the old one.

And on heritage and period homes there’s a third consideration — character. Whether restoring or rebuilding, we match the brick, bond and detailing so the chimney still looks like it belongs, restoring the rooflines that give these period homes their charm while making them safe.

FAQs

Common Questions

What’s the difference between restoration and a rebuild?

Restoration repairs and renews a structurally sound chimney (repointing, brick, crown, cap, flue). A rebuild replaces a chimney that’s leaning or failed beyond repair. We assess which yours needs.

Can you restore a heritage chimney?

Yes — sympathetically, matching brick, bond and detail to keep the character while making it safe. See our period homes guide.

Is a leaning chimney dangerous?

Yes — it’s heavy masonry up high that can shed bricks or fail, and should be assessed promptly rather than left.

Can you do a partial rebuild?

Often — usually only the section above the roofline has failed, and rebuilding from a sound base is safe and far more economical than a full rebuild.

Could restoration or a rebuild be covered by insurance?

Storm or sudden structural damage may be, and our photo reports help support a claim. See our guide.

How much does restoration or a rebuild cost?

It depends on the chimney’s condition, the extent of work and access, so we quote after a structural assessment. Call 04 3191 8137.
