Unused Fireplaces and the First Cold Night

Marion’s housing is largely post-war, and its chimneys reflect that: straightforward single-flue brick stacks serving a lounge fireplace, built between the 1950s and 70s, plus a scattering of much older stone cottage flues from the area’s earlier market-garden history and a number of slow-combustion heaters retrofitted since.

What is distinctive here is how many of these fireplaces are effectively dormant. With cheap ducted gas and split systems doing the heating, plenty of Marion fireplaces have not been lit in years. That sounds harmless, and it is exactly the opposite.
