Some of the Oldest Flues in the State

Guildford was established in 1829 as one of the three original townsites of the Swan River Colony, and its surviving building stock includes domestic architecture from the earliest decades of European settlement in Western Australia. For a chimney sweep that makes it unusual ground: the flues in the oldest cottages here are among the most historically significant we work on anywhere in the country, and they need to be treated as such.

Their age dictates everything about the approach. These are hand-built masonry flues laid with soft lime mortar, typically unlined, sometimes with more than one flue rising inside a single stack, and frequently altered at some point across nearly two centuries of use. Soot and creosote sit directly against porous masonry rather than a liner. Mortar joints wash out high on the stack where the weather is worst. Parging between adjacent flues cracks with age, letting smoke cross between them. And a hard modern cement repair, applied by somebody in a hurry, will trap moisture against soft old brick and cause more damage over a decade than the weather managed in a century.

We sweep contained and gently, camera every flue whose history is unknown before it is used, identify which flue serves which fireplace in a shared stack, and repoint using a mortar appropriate to soft historic masonry. Where a flue needs lining to be usable we say so plainly, and where it is better left decorative we say that too. Photographs of everything.
