Evaporative Cooling and What Hard Water Does to It

Evaporative cooling remains genuinely popular in Armadale, and for good reason: the south-east is one of the drier, less humid corners of the metropolitan area, which is precisely the condition an evaporative unit is designed for. Evaporative units fail in ways refrigerated systems never do, because they are essentially a water appliance sitting on your roof. Mineral content in the supply water concentrates every time the unit evaporates a cycle, and that concentrate deposits as scale on the pads, in the distribution tubes and around the float valve. Pads stiffen and channel, so air passes through dry gaps instead of wet media and the cooling effect falls away. Bleed and dump systems that should be flushing that concentrate away clog up and stop doing it. Pumps run dry, floats stick, and the sump grows an algal film that the unit then blows through the house as a distinct smell.
