Heater installed decades ago? The flue is the same age, and flues do not last forever.
Cannon gas log heaters were made for Australian conditions and a great many have been in Melbourne homes for a long time. Long-serving appliances are not automatically a problem — plenty have been well maintained and continue to work correctly — but they do warrant a more careful look at the whole installation, and particularly at the flue.
FreshDuct is not a gasfitter and does not work on gas appliances. In Victoria that work is legally restricted to licensed gasfitters regulated by Energy Safe Victoria, and it covers the burner, injector, pilot, flame-failure device, gas control and connection. If your Cannon has not had a licensed gasfitter service it recently, that is the call to make, and it is separate from ours.
Our work is the flue and chimney, and on older installations there is usually plenty of it. Flues age. Metal flue components corrode, particularly at joints that run cool and at the terminal where weather gets at them. Masonry chimneys deteriorate internally, especially where they were built for an open wood fire and have spent decades carrying much cooler, moister gas combustion products instead.
The reason to take this seriously with gas rather than wood is the absence of warning. A wood fire with a compromised flue smokes into the room and you know immediately. A gas appliance venting incorrectly produces carbon monoxide, which has no colour, no smell and no taste. The flue is the entire safety mechanism, and on an older installation nobody should be assuming it is still doing its job without having looked.

Metal flue systems corrode over decades, most severely at joints that run cool and where condensate collects. We inspect the accessible flue run and the terminal, looking for perforation, separation at joints and general deterioration. A corroded flue is not a repair you defer.
Where an older gas fire vents into an original brick chimney, decades of cooler and moister flue gas take a toll on unlined internal brickwork. We inspect the flue internally where access allows and photograph the condition rather than describing it.
Obstruction in a gas flue does not announce itself. Nesting material, fallen mortar and accumulated debris all restrict flues, and the result is combustion products entering the room rather than leaving the house. We check for it specifically and clear what we find.
Terminals weather, corrode, get damaged and occasionally disappear entirely. We inspect the termination from the roof where access is safe and report on whether it is intact, correctly positioned and clear.
The appliance itself is out of our scope entirely. Burner condition, injector and pilot servicing, flame-failure device testing, gas pressure and the connection all require a licensed gasfitter. On an older appliance we would strongly encourage that service alongside our flue work.
FreshDuct recommends an annual flue and chimney inspection for any flued gas appliance, and on an older installation we would treat that as a firm minimum. We also recommend a working carbon monoxide alarm in any home with a flued gas heater, which is inexpensive and sensible regardless of appliance age.

What an older gas installation most often needs.
The appliance side of that question must be answered by a licensed gasfitter, and if it has not been serviced recently that is the call to make. The flue side is ours, and it matters just as much: we inspect the flue internally for corrosion, obstruction and deterioration and give you a photographed written report.

It depends on what we find. Localised masonry deterioration is often repairable, and an unlined or deteriorated masonry flue can frequently be lined rather than rebuilt. Perforated or separating metal flue components generally need replacing. We photograph the condition and quote the honest remedy rather than the most expensive one.
