Split system short of gas?

Aircon regas in Sydney: the leak repaired first, then recharged properly

A split system does not use up its refrigerant. If it is short of gas, it has a leak, and in Sydney that leak is often salt corrosion on an outdoor coil near the coast. Our licensed refrigeration technicians find the leak, repair it and recharge the system to the right amount. The technician inspects and quotes before any work, and you approve first.

Signs your system is short of refrigerant

Any one of these is worth a call. They rarely fix themselves.

It runs all afternoon but the room never gets properly cold
The room feels sticky even with the air conditioner on
Frost or ice on the thin copper pipe at the outdoor unit
A hissing or bubbling sound from the indoor unit
Heating in winter has gone weak too
It was topped up last summer and it is short again

A top-up is not a repair

The gas in a split system circulates in a closed circuit, round and round between the two units, for the life of the system. Nothing burns it off. So when a technician says yours is low, the real news is that it has a hole somewhere, and the useful question is where.

The usual suspects are the flare nuts where the pipes join each unit, a brazed joint that has cracked with vibration, copper that has worn against a bracket or a wall, and, in this city, a coil eaten through by salt. Recharging without finding which one simply refills a leaking circuit, and you pay for that gas a second time when it runs out again. We locate the leak first and show it to you. If it sits in a part that is not worth fixing, you hear that before a cent is spent.

Coastal suburbs: corrosion is the usual culprit

Near the beaches, from the eastern suburbs to the Northern Beaches and the Sutherland Shire, salt in the air settles on the outdoor coil. The aluminium fins and copper tubes corrode slowly until a pinhole opens and gas escapes. A corroded coil can sometimes be repaired, but when the damage is widespread, a new outdoor coil or a new system is the honest answer, and you hear that before any money is spent. Our coastal air conditioning guide covers the simple maintenance that slows it down.

Humid days show it first

A system that is short of refrigerant loses its ability to pull moisture out of the air before it stops cooling outright. In Sydney that shows up as a room that is cool-ish but clammy, or a dry mode that no longer feels dry. It is an early sign worth acting on, because a system running short works harder and wears the compressor.

The order of work, step by step

With the leak repaired, the circuit is filled with dry nitrogen and left under pressure to prove the repair holds. Then a vacuum pump draws out the nitrogen, air and moisture. Moisture matters more than people expect in a humid city like Sydney: left inside, it mixes with the oil and attacks the compressor from within. Only then does the refrigerant go back in, weighed to the charge printed on the unit plate, and the system is run in cooling and in heating while pressures and temperatures are read. Every step is carried out by licensed refrigeration technicians, and any gas recovered from the system is captured, never released.

What sets the price, including the R22 question

Four things decide what a regas costs: where the leak is and how hard it is to reach, what the repair needs, which refrigerant the system runs on, and how many kilograms it holds. A unit on a third-floor balcony with a leak at an easy flare joint is a very different job from a corroded coil on a rooftop plant deck. That is why the technician inspects and quotes before any work, and you approve first.

The refrigerant matters too. Current systems run on R32 or R410A. Units from the early 2000s and before often run on R22, which is no longer made and is hard to get, so on those a big leak usually tips the decision towards a new system. Our split system regas cost guide goes through each factor.

A split system is two boxes joined by two copper lines and a drain. The refrigerant in those lines moves heat rather than making it: out of the house in summer, into the house in winter. The drain carries the condensation the indoor unit collects outside.

What you actually get

Everything in a Sydney regas visit

Each item is part of the job, not an extra. Repairs are quoted first and only go ahead once you approve.

Included as standard

  • Leak search at both units, the coils and the line set
  • Outdoor coil checked for salt corrosion
  • Repair of the leak, or a straight answer when it is not worth it
  • Nitrogen pressure test to prove the circuit holds
  • Deep vacuum to pull out air and humid-climate moisture
  • Refrigerant weighed in to the charge on the unit plate
  • Run in cooling and heating with pressures recorded
  • A firm quote before any work, approved by you first

And the things we will not do

  • Add gas to a circuit we know is still leaking
  • Release recovered refrigerant into the air
  • Blend one refrigerant type with another
  • Begin any work before you say yes to the quote
How it works

From short of gas to properly charged

1. Describe the problem

The brand, roughly how old it is, how it is behaving, where the outdoor unit sits, and any earlier top-ups.

2. The leak is located

Joints, coils and pipework checked until the leak is found, then shown to you.

3. Your yes on the quote

The technician inspects and quotes before any work, and you approve first.

4. Sealed, charged, proven

Repair, nitrogen test, vacuum, weighed charge and a two-mode test run. Then you pay.

Straight answers

Sydney aircon regas questions, answered straight

How much does an aircon regas cost in Sydney?

It depends on the leak, the repair, the refrigerant type and how much the system holds. You approve the quote before any work starts. There is no call-out fee and you pay after the job.

My air conditioner was regassed last year. Why is it low again?

Most likely the leak that emptied it the first time was never found. Gas in a split system is not consumed, so a repeat shortfall points to a hole that is still there. We locate it before adding anything.

Does living near the beach affect my air conditioner?

Yes. Salt air corrodes the outdoor coil and its connections, and that is one of the most common causes of refrigerant leaks in coastal Sydney. Rinsing the outdoor coil and regular servicing slow it down.

How do I know if my split system needs a regas?

Weak cooling, a clammy room on humid days, ice on the outdoor pipe and hissing sounds are the common signs. A technician confirms it by measuring pressures rather than guessing.

My unit is old and uses R22. Can it still be regassed?

Sometimes. R22 is no longer manufactured and supply is tight, so a small leak at a joint can still be worth fixing, while a large leak on an ageing unit usually is not. The technician tells you which side yours falls on before any money is spent.

Can anyone regas an air conditioner?

No. In Australia, handling refrigerant is restricted to licensed refrigeration technicians. That is who does the work on our jobs, and any gas we recover is captured, not released.

Should I regas or put the money into a new system?

For a newer unit with a fixable leak, the repair and regas nearly always wins. For an R22 unit, or a seaside unit with corrosion right through the coil, a new system is often the better spend. You get a plain recommendation for your unit.

When do I pay?

After the job is done and tested. Cash, card or bank transfer.

Worth knowing

The detail, for people who like detail

Aircon regas Sydney

FreshDuct regasses split system air conditioners across metropolitan Sydney, 7 days a week. The leak is found and repaired first, then the system is pressure tested, vacuumed and recharged by licensed refrigeration technicians.

Split system regas near the coast

Coastal systems lose refrigerant through corroded coils more than anything else. We check the coil, repair what can be repaired and tell you plainly when it cannot.

Reverse cycle regas Sydney

A reverse cycle unit heats and cools with one refrigerant circuit, so a slow leak weakens it in July as much as in January. Every regas finishes with a test run in both modes.
