Humidity. On a muggy Sydney day a split system pulls litres of water out of the air, and all of it has to leave through a thin drain line. A little slime or dust in that line is enough to back the water up into the tray and down the wall, which is why leaks cluster in February and March.
Salt air. Within a few kilometres of the coast, salt settles on the outdoor coil and the electrical connections. Over time it corrodes the thin aluminium fins and copper tubing, which ends in pinhole refrigerant leaks and corroded terminals. Our guide to air conditioning near the coast covers how to slow that down.
Western Sydney heat. In suburbs like Penrith, Blacktown and Liverpool, a system can run flat out for hours in temperatures near its design limit. That heat is hard on run capacitors, fan motors and the compressor, and it is when protection trips and failed starts show up.
