A fitting is only as good as its installation. Correct sizing, sealing and clearances are what separate an install that works for years from one that leaks, rattles or smokes.

The Chimney Side, Done Right

From the small but vital — a cap, cowl or spark arrestor to keep rain, birds and embers out — to the substantial — a flue liner and wood heater or fireplace installation — FreshDuct handles the chimney work that makes an install safe and effective.

Getting it right means matching the part or liner to your chimney and appliance, sealing the roof penetration, and keeping the correct clearances. We also manage gas fireplace work through licensed specialists, handling the flue and chimney side ourselves.

Done properly at install time, you avoid the classic problems — a smoky heater, a leaking cap, an unsafe flue — that are expensive to fix afterwards.

Signs to Watch For

Our Approach

Sized, Sealed and Compliant

We match the fitting or liner to your chimney and appliance, install it securely, seal and flash the roof penetration, and confirm the result — a cap that stays put, or a flue that vents safely and draws well.

Where licensed trades are needed — gas, or certain electrical — we coordinate them so the whole job is handled as one, and documented with photos.

Why It Matters

Draw, Heat and Safety Start at the Install

A correctly installed flue and cap is what lets a fireplace or heater do its job — creating the draught that pulls air through the fire, venting gases safely outside, and keeping rain and wildlife out. Cut corners on sizing, sealing or clearances and you get smoke, leaks, poor heat and a safety risk.

That’s why the chimney side is worth getting right at install time, by people who do it daily. A fitting installed properly simply works — and keeps working — rather than becoming a callback.

Why It Matters

A Rushed Job vs the FreshDuct Standard

The cheapest quote rarely includes inspection, containment, photo proof or proper work.

Standard Rushed / cheap FreshDuct
Inspection Skipped or rushed Visual, camera or drone
Mess control Soot left in the room Drop sheets + contained vacuum
Root cause Symptom only Diagnosed & explained
Workmanship Patch-ups Done properly, to standard
Proof None Before & after photo report
Get It Right

Sizing, Sealing and the Rules That Apply

The most common cause of a disappointing wood heater is a mismatched flue. A liner too large for the appliance cools the gases and weakens the draught; one too small chokes it. Manufacturers specify a flue size for a reason, and matching it is the difference between a heater that draws effortlessly and one that smokes.

Clearances and sealing matter just as much for safety. A wood heater and its flue must keep set distances from combustibles, and the flue must be supported and sealed where it passes through the roof — that’s what stops a flue fire reaching the structure and rain entering the cavity. In Victoria there are also rules around installation and where flues must terminate; we work to them, and point you to the Victorian wood heater rules.

Even the small installs reward care. A cap or cowl that’s the wrong size or simply jammed on is what works loose and rattles or blows off — whereas one matched and properly secured protects the flue quietly for years, and an anti-downdraft cowl can cure a chimney that smokes on windy days.

And where the appliance is gas, the certified work has to be done by a licensed gas fitter. Rather than pretend otherwise, we manage gas installs through licensed specialists and handle the chimney and flue ourselves — so you get one coordinated, correctly-licensed job.

FAQs

Common Questions

Do you install wood heaters and fireplaces?

We handle the chimney side — flue, liner, clearances, roof flashing and cap — that makes a heater or insert vent safely and draw well, coordinating other trades where needed.

Do you fit chimney caps and cowls?

Yes — we supply and fit caps, cowls and spark arrestors matched to your flue to keep out rain, birds and embers and improve draught. See cap installation.

Why does flue sizing matter?

A liner too large weakens the draught; too small chokes it. Matching the manufacturer’s flue size makes the appliance draw cleanly and safely.

Do you install gas fireplaces?

We manage gas work through licensed gas specialists and handle the chimney and flue ourselves — one coordinated, correctly-licensed job. See gas service.

Are there rules for installing a wood heater in Victoria?

Yes — clearances and flue termination requirements apply, which we work to. See the Victorian wood heater rules.

How much does installation cost?

It depends on the fitting or appliance, the flue work and access, so we quote after assessing. Call 04 3191 8137.
