Heritage Precinct Flues and Warehouse Conversions

The Port Adelaide heritage precinct holds one of the state’s better collections of 19th-century building fabric — bluestone warehouses, hotels, and tight rows of workers cottages built for a port workforce, most of them from the 1870s to the early 1900s. Solid fuel was the only heating, so the flues are everywhere, and the conversions of the last twenty years have had to deal with them one way or another.

That conversion history is what makes the chimney work here distinctive. Flues get sealed during a fit-out, boxed into a wall, partly demolished, or capped at roof level with no record kept. A later owner opens up a fireplace as a feature and has no idea whether the flue above it still runs to a termination at all. In warehouse conversions the original stacks are often huge, shared, and now serving nothing — which does not stop them leaking water into the building. Salt from the Port River adds the coastal masonry problem on top.
