Prospect was built out between the wars, and its chimneys look it. Instead of the tall Victorian stacks of North Adelaide, you get the squatter, broader brick chimneys of the California and tuckpointed brick bungalow — often with decorative brick detailing, a rendered or corbelled top, and a terracotta pot or two.
Two things dominate the work here. The first is the tuckpointing itself: it is a fine decorative finish over the mortar joints, and when it weathers, the visible damage understates the mortar loss behind it. Repairs done in the wrong material or without matching the pointing look wrong permanently on a bungalow frontage. The second is the gas conversion era — enormous numbers of Prospect fireplaces had gas log or radiant units fitted from the 1960s onwards, sometimes with a proper flue liner and sometimes not. Owners now removing those units to return to solid fuel inherit whatever was left behind.
