Ceiling & Attic Insulation in Perth

In a city with around 26 days a year above 35°C, ceiling insulation is a cooling investment before it is a heating one. FreshDuct removes old material, vacuums the cavity and installs fresh high-R batts.

Old blow-in insulation full of sand and sagging? Removal first, then a clean install.

Your roof cavity can sit far above outside air temperature on a Perth summer afternoon, and that heat radiates down through the ceiling all evening. Insulation is the only thing standing between it and the room you are trying to cool.
Insulation in Perth

In Perth, Insulation Is About Keeping Heat Out

Most people think of insulation as a winter product. In Perth that gets the priority backwards. With around 26 days a year above 35°C, about five above 40°C and a record maximum of 46.2°C set on 23 February 1991, the dominant thermal problem in a Perth house is radiant heat coming down from a roof cavity that has been baking all day.

That heat does not stop when the sun goes down. A roof space that has absorbed a full day of summer sun keeps radiating into the ceiling well into the evening, which is precisely when you are running cooling and trying to sleep. Adequate ceiling insulation cuts that transfer, which reduces the load on whatever cooling system you have — ducted, split or evaporative.

The Perth-specific complication is what is already up there. Older ceiling spaces across the character suburbs frequently have thin, compressed, sagging or entirely absent insulation, and where blow-in material was used it has usually taken on decades of windblown sand off the coastal plain. Topping up over degraded, sand-loaded material is a waste of money. We assess honestly, and where removal is warranted we vacuum the cavity out before installing anything new.

What We Assess in a Perth Roof Space

What is actually up there determines whether you need a top-up or a fresh start.

Radiant load from the roof cavity

On a 40°C Perth day a roof cavity becomes a heat store that keeps radiating downward for hours after sunset. Insulation at an appropriate R-value is what interrupts that. We measure what is installed rather than eyeballing it, because compressed or sagging material performs far below its printed rating.

Sand-loaded blow-in material

Old loose-fill and blow-in insulation across Perth has usually accumulated decades of fine windblown sand. That adds weight, fills the air pockets the material relies on to insulate, and means the stated R-value bears no relationship to what it now delivers. Topping up over it compounds the problem rather than solving it.

Gaps, penetrations and downlights

Insulation only works where it is continuous. Downlight clearances, exhaust fan penetrations, manhole hatches and ducting runs all create gaps, and a small percentage of uncovered ceiling area costs a disproportionate share of the performance. We map and address the gaps rather than laying batts around the obvious areas.

Character homes with little or none

Federation-era housing in Subiaco, Fremantle and Guildford was not built with ceiling insulation and many of those homes still have very little. These are usually the highest-impact jobs we do — but they need care around old wiring, brittle ceilings and limited access.

Damp, vermin and contamination

Before anything new goes in we check for roof leaks, rodent activity and existing damp. Installing fresh batts over a wet or contaminated cavity traps the problem and hides it. Where we find it, we photograph it and tell you what needs fixing first.

Where the money actually goes

Insulation is one of the few home upgrades where the benefit is continuous rather than occasional — it works every hot afternoon and every cold night without being switched on. We quote on the actual area, access difficulty and removal requirement rather than a flat per-square-metre rate that ignores what is already there.

How We Install

Remove, Vacuum, Then Install Properly

Where old material is degraded, sand-loaded or contaminated, we vacuum the cavity out completely and bag the waste rather than pushing it aside and laying over the top. A clean cavity is also the only condition in which you can actually see the leaks, gaps and wiring issues that are worth knowing about.

Then we install high-R thermal batts cut and fitted to the joist spacing, maintaining required clearances around downlights, flues and exhaust penetrations. You get before and after photography of the cavity, so a job you will never climb up to inspect yourself is still documented and verifiable.

Insulation Across Perth

We install ceiling insulation across metropolitan Perth. The work divides fairly neatly by housing age: newer homes through the northern corridor around Joondalup, Wanneroo and Ellenbrook and the southern corridor through Baldivis and Rockingham usually have insulation already and need assessment, gap correction or a top-up to current levels.

Older stock is where the biggest gains are. Character homes in Subiaco, Fremantle, Guildford and Bassendean, and mid-century housing through Morley, Victoria Park and Cannington, frequently have thin, compressed or sand-loaded material, or none at all. Those are the roof spaces where a proper removal and reinstall changes how the house feels on a hot night.

FAQs

Perth Insulation Questions

Does ceiling insulation help in Perth summers?

Yes — in Perth that is its primary job. With around 26 days a year above 35°C, the dominant thermal load in a Perth home is radiant heat coming down from a roof cavity that has been absorbing sun all day and keeps radiating into the evening. Ceiling insulation interrupts that transfer and reduces the load on whatever cooling system you run.

Should I remove old insulation or top it up?

It depends on what is up there. Batts in sound condition can often be topped up. Old blow-in and loose-fill material in Perth has usually taken on decades of fine windblown sand, which fills the air pockets it relies on to insulate — and adding new material over that traps the problem. We inspect and give you a straight answer rather than defaulting to the bigger job.

Do you remove old blow-in insulation?

Yes. We vacuum the cavity out completely and bag the waste rather than pushing it aside. That also gives us a clear view of the roof space, so leaks, rodent activity, damaged wiring and disconnected ducting all get found and photographed while the cavity is empty rather than sealed in under fresh batts.

What about downlights and exhaust fan clearances?

They are part of the job, not an afterthought. Insulation must maintain required clearances around downlights, flues and exhaust penetrations, and those gaps are also where a lot of performance is lost if handled carelessly. We maintain the clearances and address the gaps deliberately rather than laying batts around the easy areas.

Can you insulate an older Perth character home?

Yes, and those are often the highest-impact jobs. Federation-era homes in Subiaco, Fremantle and Guildford were not built with ceiling insulation and many still have very little. They need care around old wiring, brittle ceilings and restricted access, which we plan for — but the difference in comfort is usually the largest we see.
