Kitchen exhaust specialists

Your rangehood is not weak – it is drowning in grease

When cooking smells hang around for hours and the smoke alarm joins you for dinner, the hood has usually lost its airflow to grease – in the filters, on the fan, through the duct. We strip it, degrease it, and hand back the extraction it had on day one. Installations and outside-ducting too.

$99inspection if you want eyes on it first. Cleans and installs quoted firm and free before any work.

Why Sydney bathrooms and kitchens behave differently

Sydney’s problem is humidity, and it does not switch off in winter. Air that is already carrying moisture cannot absorb much more, so a shower in a Sydney bathroom leaves the room wet for longer than the same shower in a drier city – and an underperforming fan has far less margin before mould appears.

The second factor is density. A huge share of Sydney bathrooms sit in apartments with no window at all, extracting through a shared riser that serves the whole stack. When that riser or its roof fan is neglected, every apartment above it loses extraction at once – which is why so many of our Sydney callouts end up being building problems, not unit problems. We service single apartments and whole blocks.

What a real rangehood clean involves (not just the filters)

Filters are the start, not the job. Mesh filters saturate with grease and choke the airflow – washing them helps for a week. The grease you cannot see is the problem: coating the fan blades, lining the housing, and narrowing the duct that carries everything outside. Extraction dies in the parts a tea towel never reaches.

A FreshDuct rangehood service strips the unit: filters degreased or replaced, fan blades and housing cleaned back to metal, the duct run cleared, and the outside discharge checked. The airflow difference is immediate – and you see it in the before and after photos, like every job we do.

Grease is also the fire fuel in a kitchen exhaust. A hood packed with grease sits directly above the most common source of flame in your house. Keeping the extraction path clean is not just about smells – it removes the fuel load where ignition is most likely.

Recirculating hood? There is a better way to live

Many Sydney kitchens have hoods that filter the air and blow it straight back into the room. They trap some grease; the steam, smoke and smell simply tour your house. If your kitchen fogs up or smells linger for hours, this is likely why.

Where the layout allows it, we duct recirculating hoods to the outside – a transformation, not an upgrade. Steam, smoke and odour leave the building instead of redecorating it. Ducting work is quoted firm after we see the roof or wall path, and the hood is tested against a real cooktop before we call it done.

Made simple

Ducted vs recirculating, side by side

Ducted: it leaves
Ducted. Smoke, steam and smell are carried out of the building. The kitchen air genuinely resets between meals.
Recirculating: it stays
Recirculating. Some grease is trapped in the filter; the heat, the steam and the smell go straight back into the room – and settle on everything in it.

What you actually get

What a real rangehood service covers

Filters are where a rangehood clean starts. The grease that actually kills your extraction is further in.

Included as standard

  • Filters removed and degreased properly, or replaced when they are past saving
  • Fan blades and the inside of the housing cleaned back to metal
  • The duct run cleared as far as access allows – where most lost airflow actually hides
  • The external discharge checked, including flaps stuck shut by old grease
  • Light and switch function checked while the unit is open
  • Bench, splashback and cooktop left clean – we work over protection, not over your kitchen
  • Extraction tested against a real heat source before we finish
  • Before and after photos of what came out of the hood

And the things we will not do

  • Wash the filters, wipe the front, and call that a rangehood service
  • Leave grease in the duct where it is the actual fire fuel

Rangehood questions from Sydney kitchens

How often should a rangehood be professionally cleaned?

For a family kitchen that cooks most nights, a professional deep clean roughly once a year keeps extraction healthy – with filter washes in between. Heavy fry-ups, woks and big households shorten that interval.

Why does my kitchen still smell hours after cooking?

Because the smell never left. Either the hood’s airflow is choked with grease, or it is a recirculating unit blowing filtered-but-fragrant air back at you. A deep clean fixes the first; ducting to the outside fixes the second.

Can I just wash the filters myself?

Please do – regularly. But filters are only the first grease trap. The blades, housing and duct behind them carry the build-up that actually kills extraction, and those need the unit opened up properly.

Is a greasy rangehood really a fire risk?

Grease is fuel, and a kitchen hood full of it sits directly above open flames and hot oil. Removing the accumulated grease removes the fuel load from the one spot in your home where ignition is most likely. That is simply how fire works – no scare statistics required.

My smoke alarm triggers every time I cook. Will cleaning help?

Very often, yes. An alarm that triggers during normal cooking usually means smoke and vapour are escaping the hood instead of being extracted – the signature of choked airflow.

Do you clean commercial kitchen exhausts?

We service light-commercial hoods – cafes, small kitchens, canteens – and commercial extraction systems more broadly through our commercial and strata service. Restaurants with heavy-duty canopy systems: call and describe the setup, we will tell you honestly if it is a fit.

Can you convert my recirculating hood to ducted?

Where there is a viable path to the roof or an external wall, yes – and it is the single biggest improvement available to a kitchen’s air. Quoted firm once we have seen the run to the roof or the external wall.

Do you install new rangehoods?

Yes – supply and install, or install-only if you have bought the hood, including the ducting to outside. Kitchen renovation timing works the same as bathrooms: talk to us before the ceiling closes.

How long does a rangehood clean take?

Most residential deep cleans take one to two hours on site. You get the time estimate with the quote.

What about the grease on my cupboards?

We clean the extraction system – but with the hood actually capturing vapour again, the film on surrounding surfaces stops rebuilding. One good kitchen wipe-down after our visit tends to be the last big one.

Worth knowing

The detail, for people who like detail

Rangehood cleaning across Sydney, 7 days

From Surry Hills apartments to Kellyville family kitchens, FreshDuct restores rangehood extraction across every Sydney suburb. Same-day slots most days, no call-out fee, firm quotes before work, and before-and-after photos of what came out of your hood. Suburbs we cover include Bondi, Randwick, Parramatta, Chatswood, Manly, Newtown, Surry Hills, Ryde, Hornsby, Liverpool, Penrith, Cronulla, Bankstown, Blacktown and everywhere between.

Every hood type, every mounting

Undermount, canopy, island, slide-out and integrated hoods; ducted and recirculating; mesh and baffle filters. The grease does not care about the form factor and neither do we – the service adapts to the unit, the standard of the clean does not.

The kitchen is half the ventilation story

Homes that call us about kitchen smells often have the same issue in the bathroom – extraction that quietly stopped extracting. Because FreshDuct services the whole home’s ventilation, one visit can cover the rangehood, the bathroom fans and the dryer vent: one crew, one invoice, every extraction point in the house actually working.

Landlords, agents and end-of-lease

A grease-loaded rangehood is a standard end-of-lease dispute and an easy pre-listing win. We clean and document with photos, so the condition report has evidence instead of adjectives.
