Eureka has been manufacturing fireplaces and heaters in Ararat in western Victoria for more than 30 years, with a published range spanning roughly 12 to 40 squares of heating capacity. That is an unusually wide range, and the top end of it is genuinely large — these are heaters built for cold regional houses with real volume to heat.
The wide range is why sizing dominates this page. A heater matched to its space gets run the way it was designed to be run: air open enough for a hot, clean fire, reloaded when it needs it, burning down properly between loads. A heater substantially larger than its space cannot be run that way, because doing so would drive the room to an intolerable temperature. So it gets run with the air shut down, permanently.
That is the worst possible operating mode for a flue. A choked fire burns at low temperature, combustion is incomplete, and the unburnt volatiles go up a flue that is also running cool. They condense on the flue wall as tar, and repeated cycles harden that tar into glaze. An oversized heater in a mild Melbourne winter can lay down more deposit in one season than a correctly sized one does in three.
We are not in a position to resize anyone’s heater, and we would not pretend otherwise. What we can do is read the flue honestly. If the deposit we pull out says the appliance is being run shut down all season, we will tell you, explain what that means for your service interval, and talk through the operating changes that actually help. That is more useful than sweeping it and saying nothing.

Reading deposit, and what it says about how the heater is being run.
Hard, shiny deposit bonded to the flue wall is the signature of a fire run with the air shut down for long periods. On an oversized heater that is not misuse, it is the only way to live with the appliance. We identify it, photograph it, explain the mechanism, and quote the correct removal method rather than brushing at something a brush cannot shift.
A large heater consumes a lot of wood, which magnifies the effect of fuel quality. Unseasoned or resinous timber in a big firebox produces a great deal more deposit than dry hardwood does. We will tell you honestly what the deposit suggests about what has been going in, without lecturing you about it.
Bigger fireboxes carry bigger baffle plates, and a large plate has more span across which to distort under repeated heating. A dropped or warped baffle changes the gas path and sends more heat and unburnt gas straight up the flue. It comes out on every service and gets photographed either way.
Firebricks crack and erode, and in a heater running long seasons they do it faster. We inspect every brick, look for burn-through to the steel behind, and give you a straight answer on whether they need replacing now or will comfortably see out another winter.
Many of these heaters are in houses with tall or complicated roof forms, and flue height and termination matter more there. A flue that is marginal on height struggles to establish draught, which makes the fire smokier at start-up and adds to the deposit problem. We assess it from the roof where access is safe.
FreshDuct recommends an annual sweep as a baseline, but on a heater that is clearly run choked all season we frequently recommend a mid-winter check as well. That recommendation comes from what we pull out of the flue, and we will show you the photographs that justify it.

What a hard-worked Eureka most often needs.
It does not damage the flue directly, but it changes how you have to run the appliance, and that changes what ends up on the flue wall. A heater too large for its room gets run shut down to keep the room liveable, and shut-down burning produces tar that hardens into glaze. Glaze is the deposit most associated with flue fires, so it matters.
The usual sign is that you never run it with the air open. If a normal evening means loading it and immediately closing the air right down to stop the room overheating, the appliance is larger than the space needs. That is worth knowing, because it explains the flue and it changes how often the flue should be serviced.

A sweep uses brushes to remove loose and lightly adhered soot, which is the right tool for most flues. A deep clean uses rotary tooling to cut hardened, bonded glaze off the flue wall. It takes considerably longer and is quoted separately, and we only recommend it when we have photographed deposit that genuinely requires it.
