HeatCharm is an Australian manufacturer producing both inbuilt and freestanding wood heaters, including inbuilt models named for the period architecture they suit. That inbuilt line is why this page focuses where it does: a very large share of the HeatCharm units we service in Melbourne are sitting inside a masonry fireplace that was built for an open fire, decades or a century before the appliance existed.
That combination is genuinely different from a modern heater on a modern flue kit, and it creates problems that belong to neither the appliance nor the chimney alone. An open fire sent a huge volume of very hot gas up a wide flue, which kept the masonry warm and dry and carried moisture straight out. A closed combustion heater sends a much smaller volume of much cooler gas up that same wide flue. It moves slowly, it cools further as it rises, and water vapour and tar condense on the flue wall instead of leaving.
In old, unlined, porous brickwork that condensate soaks in. It shows up as staining on the chimney breast in an upstairs bedroom, as a persistent smell in damp weather, and as accelerated deterioration of the mortar inside the flue. It is the single most common thing we diagnose on these installations, and it is almost always blamed on the heater when the real answer is that the old flue is oversized and unlined for the appliance now connected to it.
The other item specific to these installations is the closure or register plate: the plate fitted across the old fireplace throat to seal the opening around the appliance flue. Done well it is sealed, accessible and serviceable. Done badly it is a shelf that collects falling debris, a leak path for smoke into the room, or both. We check it on every one of these jobs.

A wide brick flue built for an open fire is far larger than a closed heater needs. Gases rise slowly, cool on the way, and condense tar and moisture onto porous unlined brickwork. This is the root cause behind most of the damp staining, smells and mortar decay we are called to diagnose on these installations, and it is a flue problem rather than an appliance fault.
The plate sealing the old fireplace throat around the appliance flue is a frequent weak point. We check that it is actually sealed, that it has not been used as a resting place for falling mortar and nesting debris, and that it can still be accessed for sweeping. A plate nobody can open is a flue nobody can properly clean.
Century-old lime mortar in a flue that now runs cool and damp deteriorates. We inspect the shaft where access allows, photograph the internal condition, and give you a straight read on whether the flue needs lining rather than simply another sweep next year.
The exposed part of an old chimney takes the weather. Cracked crowns, failed flashing, spalled brick and open joints all let water into the stack, and water in the stack makes every condensation problem worse. We inspect from the roof where access is safe and photograph what we find.
The service work is unchanged: baffle out and inspected, firebricks checked, air channels cleared, ash removed, door rope tested and replaced where needed, glass and retainers checked. HeatCharm inbuilt units are generally straightforward to service once the fascia is off.
FreshDuct recommends an annual sweep and service. On an unlined original flue we also recommend an internal inspection at the same visit, because on these installations the chimney deteriorates on a timeline of its own that has nothing to do with how clean the appliance is.

Not properly, and we will not pretend otherwise. If the plate has been sealed with no access hatch we will tell you, explain what is needed to make the flue serviceable, and quote that work. Sweeping only the appliance flue and declaring the chimney clean would be dishonest.
