Escea Gas Fireplace Flue Service in Melbourne

FreshDuct inspects the flue systems serving Escea gas fireplaces across Melbourne. A sealed zero-clearance unit has a completely different flue architecture from a gas fire in an old chimney, and it must never be treated like one.

Sealed unit on a balanced flue? It must never be brushed like a wood chimney.

A sealed gas fireplace draws its combustion air from outside and returns exhaust through the same flue assembly. Damage that flue and you have not created a draught problem — you have created a combustion products problem.
Escea Flue Servicing

Sealed, Zero-Clearance Units Are a Different System Entirely

Escea gas fireplaces are modern, architecturally styled appliances and all models are zero clearance. That designation matters: a zero-clearance appliance is designed and tested to be installed directly against a framed structure, which is what allows these fireplaces to sit flush in a plaster or stone feature wall with no masonry chimney at all.

The flue architecture is fundamentally different from anything else on this site. These are sealed appliances: the firebox is closed behind fixed glass, combustion air is drawn from outside rather than from the room, and exhaust is discharged outside through a dedicated flue assembly. Nothing about the combustion process is shared with the living space, which is a genuinely safer arrangement than an open-fronted fire in an old chimney.

It also means the flue must never be treated like a chimney. There is no soot to sweep, and putting a brush into one of these systems risks damaging seals, joints and the concentric arrangement that keeps intake and exhaust separated. If anyone proposes sweeping a sealed balanced-flue gas fireplace, that is the point to stop the conversation. The correct intervention is inspection, not cleaning.

What the flue does need is verification that it remains intact, correctly assembled, properly supported, unobstructed at the terminal and clear of any deterioration in the concealed run. Because the whole assembly is usually hidden inside a framed chase, that inspection depends entirely on the access designed into the installation — which is why we scope access before we quote.

What We Inspect on a Sealed Gas Fireplace Flue

Verification of an intact system – not a cleaning job.

Flue integrity and joint assembly

The flue assembly keeps intake and exhaust separated along its whole length. We verify that it is intact, correctly assembled and properly supported wherever the installation gives us access. A separated or poorly assembled joint on this kind of system is a combustion products issue, not a performance one.

Terminal condition and obstruction

The external terminal is the one part of the system that is always accessible and always exposed to weather, debris and occasionally nesting attempts. We inspect it from the roof or wall externally where access is safe and check it is clear, undamaged and correctly positioned.

Why sweeping is the wrong intervention

These systems produce no soot and are not designed to be brushed. Introducing sweeping equipment risks damaging seals and joints and compromising the separation between intake and exhaust. We inspect rather than clean, and we will decline to sweep a sealed system no matter who has asked for it.

The concealed chase and access

A zero-clearance unit typically sits in a framed and clad chase with the flue concealed inside it. Whether the run can be inspected at all depends on the access provided at build stage. We establish that before quoting and document exactly what was and was not accessible.

The appliance itself

Burner, injector, ignition, gas control and the sealed glass assembly and its gasket are appliance components. Servicing them is licensed gasfitting work under Energy Safe Victoria and FreshDuct does not perform it. The glass gasket in particular is integral to the sealed operation and belongs to a licensed gasfitter.

Inspection interval

FreshDuct recommends an annual flue inspection alongside the appliance service a licensed gasfitter should be carrying out. Sealed systems are reliable, but “reliable” is a reason to verify them on a schedule rather than a reason to never look.

Our Scope

Inspection and Verification, Never Sweeping

On an Escea installation FreshDuct inspects the flue assembly wherever access allows, verifies joint assembly and support, checks the external terminal for damage and obstruction, and documents exactly which portions of the concealed run were and were not accessible. You get photographs and a written report.

We do not sweep sealed balanced-flue systems, and we will explain why rather than doing it on request. The appliance, its ignition, gas components and the sealed glass assembly are licensed gasfitting work under Energy Safe Victoria. FreshDuct has no affiliation with Escea and is not its agent or repairer.

Sealed Gas Fireplace Flue Work Across Melbourne

We inspect sealed gas fireplace flue systems across metropolitan Melbourne, concentrated in contemporary and renovated homes: Kew, Hawthorn, Camberwell, Balwyn, Malvern, Brighton, Williamstown, Port Melbourne, Docklands and the newer apartment and townhouse developments through the inner suburbs.

These are installations where the fireplace was specified as part of an architectural design and the flue disappears into a feature wall. That is exactly why the access question comes first: a beautifully integrated installation with no inspection access is a system nobody can verify for its whole service life.

FAQs

Escea Gas Fireplace Questions

Does a sealed gas fireplace flue need sweeping?

No, and it should not be swept. These systems produce no soot and are not designed for sweeping equipment. Introducing a brush risks damaging seals and joints and compromising the separation between intake and exhaust. The correct service is inspection and verification, which is what we provide.

What is a balanced or concentric flue?

It is a flue arrangement that brings combustion air in from outside and takes exhaust out through the same assembly, keeping the two separated. It is what allows a sealed fireplace to operate without drawing air from the room, and it is why the integrity of the assembly matters so much more than cleanliness does.

Can you inspect a flue hidden inside a feature wall?

Only as far as the access provided allows. If an access panel was designed in, or the chase is reachable from a roof space, we can inspect a great deal. If the run is fully sealed behind finished cladding, we inspect what we can, check the terminal externally, and state clearly in the report which sections were inaccessible.

Is FreshDuct an authorised Escea service agent?

No. FreshDuct is an independent flue and chimney service company with no affiliation to Escea or its dealers, and we are not gasfitters. We inspect and verify flue systems. The appliance, its gas components and its sealed glass assembly go to a licensed gasfitter.

Are sealed gas fireplaces safer than open gas fires?

In terms of the relationship with the room, yes. A sealed unit draws combustion air from outside and discharges exhaust outside, so the combustion process is not shared with the living space at all. That is a meaningfully safer arrangement, and it makes the integrity of the flue assembly the thing that matters most.
