Sound familiar?

Which of these is your fan?

Tick two or more and it is time to book — every one of these gets worse, never better, on its own.

Switch is on, fan does nothing at all – dead silence
The motor hums but the blades never start turning
It spins, but steam sits in the room like the fan is not there
Runs for a few minutes then stops, or cuts in and out
A burning or hot-dust smell when the fan runs
It tripped the safety switch – and you are scared to turn it back on
The light works but the fan half of the unit is dead
It was slow for months and has finally quit

Why Perth bathrooms and kitchens behave differently

Perth adds a factor most cities do not: salt. Coastal air corrodes the metal parts of an exhaust system – motor housings, fixings, and especially the backdraft damper at the discharge. A seized, corroded damper is one of the most common causes of both the flapping noise and the lost airflow we find in suburbs near the coast.

Perth’s long hot summers also mean bathrooms and laundries get used hard with the house shut up against the heat, while limestone and brick construction keeps interior surfaces cool enough to condense steam. Extraction that leaves the building is the fix; recirculating the same moist air around the house is not.

What actually kills exhaust fans (and what we do about it)

Dust is the number one killer. Lint and dust wrap the blades and pack the motor housing, so the motor works harder, runs hotter and wears out early. Half the “dead” fans we see are motors that cooked slowly under a blanket of dust that a yearly clean would have prevented.

Capacitors fail, bearings dry out, switches and timers die. These are genuine repairs: a technician replaces the failed component and the fan runs like new for a fraction of replacement cost. The skill is knowing which fault it is without guessing – which is exactly what the $99 inspection answers.

Sometimes the fan is fine and the ducting is not. A crushed duct, a blocked discharge grille or a jammed damper flap can strangle a healthy fan. Repairing the fan would fix nothing – we check the whole run before we quote anything.

Repair or replace? Our honest rule

If the repair costs a meaningful fraction of a replacement, replacement usually wins – because a new fan brings a fresh motor, quieter running and often better extraction for the same money. A like-for-like replacement is a complete job from $250, typically $280 to $480 with the fan included.

Our technicians quote both paths when it is genuinely close, and recommend the cheaper one when it is not. We would rather you trust us for the next twenty years of jobs across the whole house than win an extra hundred dollars today – that is how a company gets to 600+ five-star reviews.

What you actually get

What the $99 diagnosis covers

A proper diagnosis, not a guess – because replacing the wrong part fixes nothing and you pay twice.

Included as standard

  • Motor tested under load, plus the capacitor and switch – the three parts that account for most dead fans
  • Bearings checked by hand and by ear, so grinding is caught before it seizes
  • Actual extraction measured, so a fan that spins but does not pull is not passed as working
  • Duct run and damper inspected – a crushed duct or jammed flap mimics a broken fan exactly
  • The failure explained to you, with the worn part in hand where there is one
  • Repair price and replacement price side by side whenever the call is close
  • Common failure parts already in the van, so most repairs finish in the same visit
  • Photos of what was found and what was done

And the things we will not do

  • Replace a motor without first ruling out the duct and the discharge point
  • Leave a humming, stalled fan running because it is technically still going
  • Charge you for parts we did not fit
How it works

Booked today, sorted this week

Describe the symptom

Dead, humming, weak, tripping – your description usually narrows it to two or three causes before we arrive.

$99 inspection, on the spot

We open the unit, test the motor and capacitor, and check the duct run and discharge – the whole system, not just the fan.

Firm quote, honest advice

Repair price and replacement price side by side when it is close. Your call, zero pressure.

Fixed, photographed, then paid

Most repairs finish the same visit. Before and after photos, payment after the work.

Straight answers

Repair questions, straight answers

My fan hums but does not spin – what is wrong with it?

Nine times out of ten that is a seized bearing or a failed start capacitor. Both are genuine repairs. Turn the fan off at the switch until it is looked at – a humming stalled motor is cooking itself.

The fan just stopped completely. Is it dead?

Not necessarily. A dead fan can be a failed switch, a tripped circuit, a failed timer or a cooked motor. The first three are cheap fixes. The $99 inspection tells you which one you have before you spend a dollar on parts.

The fan runs but does nothing – the mirror stays fogged.

Running is not extracting. Dust-packed blades, a crushed or disconnected duct, or a blocked discharge point can cut extraction to almost nothing while the motor spins happily. We test actual airflow, not just whether it turns.

Is it worth repairing an old exhaust fan?

If the motor is healthy and one component failed – yes, usually. If the motor itself is worn, replacement wins: a complete like-for-like swap starts at $250 and comes with a fresh, quieter, often stronger unit. We quote both when it is close.

Can you repair the fan in a 3-in-1 heater-fan-light unit?

Yes – the fan module in 3-in-1 units fails more often than the heat lamps and is usually repairable or replaceable without changing the whole unit.

My fan trips the safety switch. Should I keep resetting it?

No. A fan that trips the RCD has an electrical fault – moisture in the housing, damaged wiring or a failing motor. Leave it off and book it – a fan that trips the safety switch is the one fault on this page that should never wait.

Do you carry parts, or is it two visits?

Our vans carry the common failure parts – capacitors, switches, standard fan units – so most repairs finish in a single visit. If your unit needs a specific part, we tell you upfront and fit it on a scheduled return.

How fast can you come?

Same-day slots are available most days, 7 days a week, across metropolitan Perth. Tell us if the bathroom is the home’s only one – we prioritise those.

Do you repair kitchen rangehood fans too?

Yes – motors, switches, lights and filters, plus the degrease that most ‘broken’ rangehoods actually need. See our kitchen rangehood page for the full service.

What does the repair itself usually cost?

It depends entirely on the failed part, which is why we inspect for $99 first and then give a firm price. The minimum call-out for any completed work is $250 – and if replacement is smarter, that $250 is already most of the way to a brand-new installed fan.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes – FreshDuct backs every job. If something we fixed is not right, we come back. Payment is after the job, so you are never paying for a promise.

Worth knowing

The detail, for people who like detail

Exhaust fan repairs across Perth, 7 days

From dead motors in Subiaco to humming fans in Rockingham, FreshDuct repairs bathroom, toilet, laundry and kitchen exhaust fans across every Perth suburb, 7 days a week. Police-checked technicians, the common failure parts already in the van, and before-and-after photos on every single job. Suburbs we cover include Fremantle, Joondalup, Subiaco, Cottesloe, Scarborough, Morley, Armadale, Rockingham, Mandurah, Canning Vale, Applecross, Claremont, Hillarys, Ellenbrook and everywhere between.

Why a proper diagnosis beats a guess

Most fan repairs are cheap; wrong guesses are not. Replacing a fan whose ducting is crushed fixes nothing. Cleaning a fan whose capacitor has failed fixes nothing. The $99 inspection tests the motor, the electrics, the duct run and the discharge point – so the money you spend afterwards fixes the actual fault.

The repairs we do most

Start capacitors, seized bearings, failed wall switches and timers, jammed damper flaps, disconnected ducts, blocked discharge grilles, and the deep clean that restores a dust-strangled motor. Plus the honest ‘this one is done – replace it’ when that is the truth.

Landlords and property managers

A dead bathroom fan in a rental becomes a mould complaint within the season. We repair with documentation and photo reports, invoice remotely, and can attend with tenant-arranged access – one email to book, evidence for your file when it is done.
