Chimney Caps & Cowls in Caulfield

Open chimney pots on Caulfield's interwar stacks take in rain, leaves and birds all year. FreshDuct fits rain caps, bird guards and cowls that suit a period chimney, sealed from the roof and photographed.

Unused Caulfield flue letting damp in? A vented cap keeps rain out without sealing the stack up.

Under a canopy of street trees, an uncapped Caulfield flue fills with leaves every autumn and with rain every winter, and both end up on the smoke shelf. A cap fitted before the leaves fall saves the clean-out.

Fitting caps and cowls to Caulfield's open interwar chimney pots

A great many Caulfield chimneys still finish the way they were built, with an open pot and nothing over it. That was fine when a fire burned every night and kept the flue warm and dry. Today many of these fireplaces are lit a few times a winter or not at all, and the open pot spends the rest of the year letting in rain, leaf litter from the street trees and the occasional bird looking for somewhere to nest.

The right cap depends on what the flue is doing. A working open fireplace gets a rain cap with a bird guard, sized to the pot so the draw is not choked. A flue that is no longer used gets a vented cap that keeps water out while still letting the stack breathe, because sealing an interwar chimney completely traps moisture in the brick and shows up later as damp inside.

On a Caulfield roof we measure the pot, choose a cap that sits square on it, and fix it with fasteners that will not stain the brick below. Where a fireplace has always smoked a little on windy evenings, an anti-downdraught cowl is tried and the draw tested with it on. The finished cap is photographed from the roof, so you know it is there without going up to look.

Local Know-How

Chimney Caps & Cowls in Caulfield: what is different here

Autumn leaves down the pot

Caulfield's street trees drop their leaves straight into any open flue beneath them, and a wet mat of leaves on the smoke shelf is what many callers describe as a blocked chimney. A capped pot with a guard stops the litter at the top.

The crown under the pot

A cap stops rain going down the flue, but on an interwar stack the mortar crown the pot stands in is often cracked, and water gets in around the pot instead. When we fit a cap we check the crown and tell you if it needs patching first.

A cap that suits the house

A shiny modern cowl on a red-brick Edwardian chimney looks wrong from the street. On Caulfield's character homes we pick a low-profile cap in a finish that sits quietly on the pot, and fit it without disturbing the original brickwork.

Measured, Then Fitted

The cap that matches the pot and the problem

Interwar pots vary in size and shape, and a cap that is the wrong size either chokes the draw or lets rain past. We measure on the roof, fit a cap that seats properly, and seal it so it stays put through a Caulfield winter.

If we are already at your place for a sweep, the pot is measured on the same visit and a cap quoted on the spot, with a photo of the finished job before we come down.

FAQs

Chimney Caps & Cowls in Caulfield — questions answered

Will a cap stop the damp on our Caulfield chimney breast?

Only if the water is going down the flue. If the crown or the flashing has cracked, rain gets into the stack around the pot and a cap makes no difference. We check both when fitting the cap and tell you which is letting the water in, so you do not buy a cap to fix a crown.

Birds have nested in my Caulfield chimney — can you clear it and stop it happening again?

Yes. We clear the nest from the flue and smoke shelf, sweep the flue so nothing is left to catch, then fit a cap with a bird guard sized to the pot. The guard keeps birds and leaves out without restricting the draw of the fireplace.

Do I really need a chimney cap?

An open flue lets rain, leaves and birds straight in. A cap keeps the flue dry, keeps nests out and, on a wood heater, a spark arrestor stops embers leaving the flue.

Why does my fireplace smoke when it is windy?

Usually a downdraught — wind pushing back down the flue. An anti-downdraught cowl is the normal fix; we confirm the draw with a test before and after.

Can you fit a cap while sweeping?

Yes. If we are on the roof for a sweep and the flue needs a cap, we can quote it on the spot and fit it the same visit where we have the right size.
