Clothes taking two cycles to dry?

Dryer vent cleaning in Sydney: lint out, airflow back

A vented clothes dryer pushes hot, damp, lint-laden air out through a hose and a duct, and the lint filter never catches all of it. In a humid Sydney laundry that lint turns damp and sticks, and in apartments the duct often runs a long way through a ceiling or into a shaft before it reaches outside. We clear the whole run, check the outlet and test the airflow, with before and after photos every job.

Signs your dryer vent is choking on lint

Any one of these is worth a call. They rarely fix themselves.

Towels still damp after a full cycle
Clothes coming out much hotter than they used to
A scorched or burning smell while the dryer runs
The dryer cutting out part-way through a cycle
Lint piling up around the outside flap, or a flap that never opens
The laundry turning steamy and damp whenever the dryer is on

Why lint in the duct is a fire risk

The lint filter in the door catches most of the fluff, not all of it. The finest fibres ride the hot air out through the flexible hose and the duct, and they settle wherever the air slows down: at every bend, at joins, in sagging sections of hose and behind the outside flap. Over months that becomes a felt lining, then a plug.

Lint is dry, light and catches easily, and a blocked vent traps heat around the dryer’s heating element because the hot air has nowhere to go. If your dryer keeps cutting out mid-cycle, that is usually its overheat protection, and a warning rather than a fault to reset and ignore. Until the vent has been cleared, do not run the dryer overnight or while nobody is home.

Sydney humidity makes lint stick

Dryer exhaust is warm and full of water. When the duct runs through a cooler ceiling space or an outside wall, some of that moisture condenses inside it, and on a humid Sydney day the air outside is already close to saturated. Wet lint does not blow through; it turns into a damp paste that clings to bends and low points, and water can pool in a flexible hose that sags. That is how a duct that was fine in winter can clog over one summer.

Our guide to bathroom humidity and ventilation in Sydney explains how damp air moves through a home, and mould and humidity in Sydney homes covers what happens when it is left there.

Apartment laundries: ceilings, shafts and long runs

Many Sydney apartments have a cupboard laundry with the dryer on a bracket above the washer. Its vent may run through a bulkhead to a grille on the facade, join a vertical shaft shared with the floors above and below, or, in some buildings, simply end inside the ceiling void. A long run with several bends clogs much faster than a short hose through a wall, and a duct ending in the ceiling leaves the lint and moisture up there.

We clean the duct that serves your apartment and show you with photos where it actually goes. Shared shafts and any roof fan belong to the building, so the owners corporation or building manager arranges and approves that part. If the laundry also has a ceiling exhaust fan, it is worth doing in the same visit: our exhaust fan cleaning in Sydney clears the fan and its duct together.

Vented, condenser or heat pump: which one do you have?

Vented dryers blow their exhaust outside through a hose or duct, and that duct is what we clean. Condenser dryers have no outside vent: they cool the steam inside the machine and send the water to a tank or a drain, and the lint filter and condenser unit are cleaned by the owner as the manual describes. Heat pump dryers work in a closed loop at a lower temperature, again with no vent duct, just filters to rinse.

If you have a condenser or heat pump dryer, tell us when you call. There may be nothing on the dryer for us to clean, and we would rather say so than book a visit you do not need. A laundry that still turns damp is usually a ventilation question, and our exhaust fan services in Sydney page covers that side.

Between cleans: what you can do

Clear the lint filter after every load, and wash it now and then, because fabric softener leaves a film that blocks air even when the filter looks clean. Keep the hose short and straight, and do not push the dryer hard against the wall where it crushes the hose. Now and then, run the dryer and check that the outside flap opens. If clothes start taking longer to dry, book then, not after the dryer starts cutting out.

What you actually get

What the dryer vent clean actually includes

Every item below is part of the visit. If something else needs attention, you hear about it first.

Included as standard

  • The dryer type and the full vent route identified before anything is moved
  • Dryer carefully moved out and the hose disconnected
  • Lint cleared from the hose, the duct and every bend with brushes and vacuum extraction
  • Outside flap or grille cleared, and checked that it opens freely
  • Lint filter housing vacuumed without opening the dryer
  • Airflow checked at the outlet with the dryer running after the clean
  • Before and after photos of what came out
  • A plain note of anything wrong: a crushed hose, a missing flap, a duct ending in the ceiling

And the things we will not do

  • Open up the dryer’s internals or repair the appliance itself
  • Find a dryer venting into the ceiling and say nothing
  • Touch a shared shaft or roof fan without the building’s approval
  • Book a vent clean for a dryer that has no vent
  • Push lint further down the duct and call it clean

Dryer vent questions from Sydney households

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

It depends on how much the dryer runs and how long the vent is. Daily use, long apartment runs and ducts with several bends need it more often. Slower drying is the clearest sign.

How much does dryer vent cleaning cost in Sydney?

It depends on the dryer, the length of the run and the access. The office gives you an estimate when they call. There is no call-out fee, and you pay after the job.

Do condenser or heat pump dryers need vent cleaning?

No. They have no outside vent; their filters are cleaned by the owner as the manual describes. If the laundry still gets damp, look at the exhaust fan.

My apartment dryer vents into the ceiling. Is that a problem?

Yes. Lint and moisture build up in the ceiling instead of leaving the building. We photograph it so you can raise it with the building manager.

Can you clean a vent that joins a shared building shaft?

We clean the duct serving your apartment. The shared shaft and any roof fan are common property, so the building manager or owners corporation arranges and approves that work, and several apartments can be done together.

My dryer smells like burning. What should I do?

Stop the dryer, switch it off at the wall and let it cool. Do not use it again until the lint filter and vent have been checked. If there is smoke or flame, get out and call 000.

Do I need to be home?

Someone needs to let the technician in. In an apartment block, tell the building manager in case access to a service area is needed.

Can you clean the laundry exhaust fan at the same time?

Yes. Mention it when you book and the technician will do both in one visit.
