First question

Is it the ducts, or the heater?

Plenty of “my heating doesn’t work” calls turn out to be a duct problem, and plenty of duct quotes are really a heater that’s reached the end. Here’s the quick way to tell.

Probably the ducts

  • One or two rooms never warm up (or cool down) while the rest of the house is fine
  • Weak airflow at some outlets but strong airflow at others
  • Dust, grit or insulation fibres blowing out of a vent
  • A whistle, rattle or flapping sound in the ceiling when the system runs
  • A musty or animal smell that starts when the system turns on

Probably the heater or unit

  • No warm air from any outlet, or the system won’t start at all
  • An error code on the controller or the unit shutting itself down
  • The heater has been condemned or shut off as unsafe
  • Repeated repairs on the same unit over the last few winters

If it’s the heater: ducted heating replacement

What goes wrong

Six duct faults we find and fix

1

Disconnected runs

A duct can work loose from its outlet boot or junction, often after other trades have been in the roof. The air it carries heats or cools the roof space instead of the room.

2

Crushed or kinked ducts

Flexible ducting gets flattened when it’s walked on, stored over or squeezed through a tight crawl space. A kink chokes the airflow to every outlet past it.

3

Torn or perished outer jackets

The outer sleeve and insulation of flexible duct break down with age and roof-space heat. Once it splits, the duct loses heat on the way and can sweat in summer.

4

Rodent damage

Rats and mice chew through duct jackets and nest inside runs. That’s a repair job and a cleaning job: the damaged section comes out and the system is cleaned of what they left behind.

5

Sagging or unsupported runs

When straps fail, ducts sag between supports and form low points and kinks. Re-strapping and re-routing restores a smooth run.

6

Water and mould damage

A roof leak onto ductwork leaves stains, smells and sometimes mould inside the run. Wet, contaminated sections are replaced rather than cleaned.

Repair or replace

How we call it — honestly

Most duct problems are local: one disconnected outlet, one crushed run, one section chewed by rodents. Those get repaired — the section is reconnected, re-strapped or replaced, and the rest of the system is left alone.

Replacing the whole system makes sense when the ducting has failed across the house, when it’s contaminated beyond cleaning, or when you’re changing from gas ducted heating to a ducted reverse cycle system, where the program guidance recommends new ductwork. Age alone is not a reason.

Either way, you see the photos first and get a firm quote before any work starts. We won’t sell you new ducts you don’t need — and if a clean is all it takes, that’s what we’ll recommend.

Can damaged ducts be repaired, or do they have to be replaced?

Most can be repaired. A disconnected, crushed or chewed section is reconnected or replaced on its own, and the rest of the system stays. We only recommend replacing the whole system when the ducting has failed throughout or is contaminated beyond cleaning.

How do I know if my ducts are damaged?

The usual signs are one room that never warms up or cools down, weak airflow at some outlets, dust or insulation fibres coming out of a vent, and noise in the ceiling when the system runs. We confirm it by inspecting the runs and photographing what we find.

Is my problem the ducts or the heater?

If some rooms are fine and others aren’t, it’s usually the ducts. If no outlet gets warm air, the system shows an error, or the heater has been shut off as unsafe, it’s the heater — see our ducted heating replacement page for that.

Do I need new ducts if I switch from gas heating to reverse cycle?

Often, yes. The program guidance recommends new ductwork and fittings when gas ducted heating becomes ducted reverse cycle, because reverse cycle moves more air at a lower temperature. We inspect the existing ducts and tell you plainly what can stay.

Should ducts be cleaned before they’re repaired?

If they’re dirty, yes — there’s little point reconnecting a run full of dust or rodent debris. We can clean and repair in the same visit, and you see before & after photos of both.

How much does duct repair or replacement cost?

It depends on how many runs are affected, how easy the roof space or underfloor is to work in, and whether it’s a repair or a whole system. There’s no call-out fee, you get a firm quote before any work starts, and you pay after the job.

Can rodent-damaged ducts be fixed?

Yes. The chewed or soiled sections come out and are replaced, and the system is cleaned of nesting material and droppings. We photograph the damage so you can see what was there.

Will repairing my ducts help my heating bills?

A disconnected or torn duct sends heated air into the roof space instead of the room, so the system runs longer to warm the house. Fixing the leak puts that air back where you want it.

When do I pay?

After the job is done and you’ve seen the before & after photos. Cash, card or bank transfer.

What if I’m not happy?

Tell us. If something isn’t right, we come back and put it right — that’s our 100% satisfaction commitment.

Are your technicians insured and police-checked?

Yes. Police-checked technicians, NDIS Worker Screening checks, and full public liability and business insurance.
