Split system short of gas?

Aircon regas in Melbourne: find the leak first, then recharge it properly

A split system does not use up its refrigerant. If it is short of gas, there is a leak, and topping it up without fixing that only buys a few weeks. Our licensed refrigeration technicians find the leak, repair it, and recharge the system to the right amount. The technician inspects and quotes before any work, and you approve first.

Sound familiar?

Signs your system is short of refrigerant

Any one of these is worth a call. They rarely fix themselves.

It runs all day but the room never gets properly cold
Frost or ice on the thin copper pipe at the outdoor unit
A hissing or bubbling sound from the indoor unit
Heating in winter has gone weak too
Power bills up while comfort is down
Someone topped it up last summer and it is back to square one

Why a regas on its own does not last

Refrigerant travels in a sealed loop between the indoor and outdoor units. It is not consumed like fuel, so a system that is short has lost it through a leak: a flare joint, a cracked braze, a corroded coil or a pipe that has rubbed through. Adding gas without finding that leak means paying for the same refrigerant again, and the system runs short of capacity in between.

So our regas starts with the leak. The technician checks the joints at both units, the coils and the line set, and confirms the leak before recharging. If the leak is in a coil that is not worth repairing, you are told before anything is spent.

How a proper regas is done

Once the leak is repaired, the system is pressure tested to make sure it holds, then vacuumed to remove air and moisture, which damage the compressor if left inside. It is then recharged with the correct refrigerant, measured against the amount the manufacturer specifies, and tested at operating pressures in cooling and in heating.

Refrigerant work in Australia must be done by licensed refrigeration technicians, and recovered gas is handled properly, never vented. That is the standard our technicians work to.

Older systems: R22 and what it means for you

Many older split systems use R22, a refrigerant that has been phased out. It is now scarce, so a large leak on an R22 system can make repair poor value. Newer systems use R410A or R32. If your system is an older R22 unit, the technician tells you plainly whether a repair is sensible or whether replacing the system is the better spend.

What it costs, and why we quote on site

The cost depends on where the leak is, what it takes to repair, the refrigerant type and how much the system holds. That is why the technician inspects and quotes before any work, and you approve first. Our split system regas cost guide explains what moves the price.

A split system is two boxes joined by two copper lines and a drain. The refrigerant in those lines moves heat rather than making it: out of the house in summer, into the house in winter. The drain carries the condensation the indoor unit collects outside.

Straight answers

Aircon regas questions, answered straight

How much does an aircon regas cost in Melbourne?

It depends on the leak, the repair, the refrigerant type and how much the system holds. You approve the quote before any work starts. There is no call-out fee and you pay after the job.

Why does my air conditioner keep needing a regas?

Because the leak was never fixed. Refrigerant is not used up; if a system keeps running short, gas is escaping somewhere. We find and repair the leak before recharging.

How do I know if my split system needs a regas?

Weak cooling or heating, ice on the outdoor pipe, and hissing or bubbling sounds are the common signs. A technician confirms it by checking pressures rather than guessing.

Can you regas an R22 system?

R22 has been phased out and is scarce. For small, repairable leaks it can still make sense; for large leaks on old systems, replacement is often the better value. You are told which before any spend.

How long does a regas take?

It depends on finding and repairing the leak. The technician explains the steps on the day before starting.

Who is allowed to regas an air conditioner?

Refrigerant work in Australia must be done by licensed refrigeration technicians. Ours are licensed, and refrigerant is recovered properly, never vented.

Is it better to replace than regas?

On a newer system with a repairable leak, repair and regas is usually the sensible choice. On an old R22 system with a major leak, replacement often is. We give you a straight answer for your unit.

When do I pay?

After the job is done and tested. Cash, card or bank transfer.

Aircon regas Melbourne

FreshDuct regasses split system air conditioners across Melbourne, 7 days a week. The leak is found and fixed first, then the system is pressure tested, vacuumed and recharged by licensed refrigeration technicians.

Split system regas

A split system short of refrigerant has a leak. We repair it, recharge to the manufacturer amount and test in both modes, so you are not paying for the same gas again next summer.

Reverse cycle regas

Reverse cycle systems use the same refrigerant for heating and cooling, so a leak weakens both. We test the system in both modes after the recharge.
