Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Gisborne

Gisborne winters are long enough and cold enough that a wood heater runs most of the day, and the flue shows it. FreshDuct sweeps and deep cleans glazed creosote from ranges heaters and older open fires, and photographs the difference.

Heater has run all day since autumn? That flue has earned a sweep before the next cold snap.

In the ranges a heater burns from breakfast to bedtime for months, and creosote in the flue bakes into glaze. Once it has glazed, an ordinary brush polishes it; it needs a proper deep clean before the next season of hard burning.
Hard-Run Ranges Flues

Why a Gisborne flue needs more than a light brush

Gisborne sits high enough in the Macedon Ranges to have a real winter, and the town heats accordingly. Wood heaters on the acreage blocks and open fires in the older weatherboard and brick places near the centre run through frosty mornings and cold evenings for months on end. That is a lot of smoke through one flue, and much of it passes through while the heater is damped down for the night, which is exactly when creosote condenses and sticks.

Creosote that has been through a few weeks of that cycle turns from flaky to tarry, and after a full season of it the tar bakes into glaze: a hard, shiny layer that a standard brush slides over. A sweep is the right job for flaky and tarry deposit. Glaze needs a deep clean with a rotary head and often more than one pass. We camera the flue and tell you which it is before we start, so the quote is firm.

The older masonry chimneys around the centre are a different sweep again. Their flues are unlined brick, wider and rougher than a steel flue, with a smoke shelf that holds years of fallen soot. We use larger rods and heads, vacuum the shelf out rather than leaving it, and check the mortar on camera while we are in there. Either way, with bush and grassland close by, we finish by clearing the cap or arrestor so nothing glowing can leave the top.

Local Know-How

Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Gisborne: what is different here

Glazed, not just dirty

A ranges heater that runs from morning to night for months bakes creosote into glaze, and a standard sweep will not shift it. We check on camera first and quote a deep clean only where the flue actually needs one.

Old open fires in town

The weatherboard and brick homes near the centre still run open fires up unlined brick flues. They take wider heads, a vacuumed smoke shelf and a look at the mortar on camera, which a wood heater sweep does not.

Embers near the bush

Grassland and bush sit close to Gisborne homes, and a flue full of creosote is a flue that can throw a burning flake. A clean flue and a clear spark arrestor are the two things a sweep gives you against that.

Slowing the Glaze

Why a ranges heater glazes, and what slows it down

Damping a heater right down for a long slow burn is the ranges habit, and it is what turns creosote into glaze. A short hot burn morning and night on dry seasoned wood keeps the deposit flakier, so the next sweep is a sweep, not a deep clean.

Every sweep comes with before and after photos of the flue and the arrestor, and if we found glaze rather than soot we show you that too, so you can see what the heater is doing to the flue between visits.

FAQs

Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Gisborne — questions answered

Our Gisborne wood heater runs all day through winter — is one sweep a year enough?

For a heater that runs all day, an autumn sweep is the minimum and a mid-winter check is sensible. Ranges heaters build glaze quickly, and glaze caught early is a sweep rather than a deep clean. If the glass blackens within days or the draw drops, that is the flue telling you.

Do you sweep the old brick chimney on a weatherboard house in Gisborne as well as wood heaters?

Yes, and it is a different job. An unlined brick flue takes wider heads, the smoke shelf gets vacuumed out, and we camera the mortar while we are there. Basic chimney cleaning is $169 for either, and the inspection comes with it.

How often should a chimney be swept?

Fire authorities recommend an annual sweep before winter. If you burn most nights, burn unseasoned or soft wood, or run a heater on low for long periods, sooner.

Is chimney sweeping messy?

Not with FreshDuct. We lay drop sheets, seal the fireplace opening and use contained, high-power vacuuming so the soot is captured rather than left in your living room.

What is the difference between a sweep and a deep clean?

A standard sweep clears regular soot and light creosote. A deep clean tackles heavy, baked-on or glazed creosote that a normal brush will not shift.
