The chimneys along Balwyn's clinker-brick and tudor-revival streets were laid out in the 1920s and 30s around briquettes and coal, fuels that burned hot and steady and kept the flue walls warm. Almost every one of those fireplaces now burns wood. Wood is cooler and wetter, so the flue runs below the temperature it was designed for, condensation forms on the unlined brick, and the soot that settles is tarry rather than the dry powder a briquette fire left behind.
That tarry deposit is what a Balwyn sweep is really about. It does not fall to the grate; it bonds to the brick and, left another season, hardens into glaze that a soft brush skates over. Because these stacks are tall, the camera matters as much as the brush. Once the flue is clean we run a camera up it to confirm the walls are bare and to look at the state of the brick where it has been running cool for decades. If the deposit came off as glaze, or the mortar looks soft, we tell you plainly and photograph it. Often the practical advice is simply to burn drier wood and sweep a little more often.
