Chimney Caps & Cowls in Bundoora

Many of the caps on Bundoora’s post-war chimneys have rusted through or gone, and the flues under them are wide open to rain and birds. FreshDuct fits caps, bird guards and cowls to older stacks and newer heater flues, and photographs them from the roof.

Open fireplace in a rental that never gets lit? A cap and bird guard keep the flue dry and quiet between tenants.

An uncapped mid-century flue in Bundoora takes every rain straight down onto the smoke shelf, where it mixes with old soot into a tar that smells through the house. A cap costs far less than the repair that damp eventually causes.
Caps for Older Stacks

Putting a cap back on a Bundoora chimney that has lost one

The caps that went on Bundoora’s post-war chimneys were mostly galvanised, and decades later a lot of them have rusted at the fixings and blown off, or were never there in the first place. What is left is an open masonry flue on a house that may be occupied by a tenant who never lights the fire, taking in rain, leaves and nesting birds season after season with nobody looking up.

The fix is straightforward and we do it from the roof: a stainless or coated cap sized to the flue, with a bird guard, corrosion-resistant fasteners and a seal to the crown so it does not go the way of the last one. Where a fireplace is genuinely never used, a closure cap keeps the flue dry and the birds out until someone wants to light it again.

The newer estates need a different terminal. An inbuilt wood heater on a steel flue finishes in a cowl that has to be rated for the appliance and secured properly, and if the heater is used a lot, a spark arrestor cowl is worth having. Where a fireplace smokes back on a windy night, we test an anti-downdraught cowl rather than assuming it.

Local Know-How

Chimney Caps & Cowls in Bundoora: what is different here

Rusted or missing on older stacks

A galvanised cap from the year the house was built has usually rusted off a Bundoora chimney by now. We fit a corrosion-resistant replacement sized to the flue, fixed with fasteners that will not rust out and sealed to the crown.

Bird guards for fireplaces nobody lights

An open flue on a rental where the tenant never uses the fire is a nesting site by spring. A cap with a bird guard, or a closure cap on a fireplace that is out of use, keeps the flue clear and dry between tenancies.

Cowls on the estate wood heaters

The steel flues on Bundoora’s newer homes need a cowl rated for the heater and secured against wind. We replace a damaged or wrong cowl, fit a spark arrestor where the heater works hard, and check the draw with the baffle in place.

Fitted From the Roof

Sized, secured and photographed for the file

We measure the flue and look at the terminal, then match a cap, guard or cowl to the appliance below and the problem above. It is fitted from the roof with harness work where the pitch calls for it, and measured on the same visit as a sweep.

A photo of the finished cap from the roof comes with the job, which for a landlord is the proof the flue is closed to weather and birds. If the old cap only needs refixing, that is what we quote rather than a new one.

FAQs

Chimney Caps & Cowls in Bundoora — questions answered

The cap has blown off our old Bundoora chimney. Can you replace it without scaffolding?

On most post-war Bundoora homes, yes, with roof access and harness work. We measure the flue, fit a corrosion-resistant cap with a bird guard, seal it to the crown and photograph it. A very tall or unstable stack is the exception, and we say so before quoting.

Our Bundoora rental has a fireplace the tenants never use. Should the flue be capped?

Yes. An open, unused flue takes in rain and nesting birds and the smell ends up in the house. A cap with a bird guard keeps it dry and clear, or a closure cap shuts it off completely until someone wants to use the fireplace again.

Do I really need a chimney cap?

An open flue lets rain, leaves and birds straight in. A cap keeps the flue dry, keeps nests out and, on a wood heater, a spark arrestor stops embers leaving the flue.

Why does my fireplace smoke when it is windy?

Usually a downdraught — wind pushing back down the flue. An anti-downdraught cowl is the normal fix; we confirm the draw with a test before and after.

Can you fit a cap while sweeping?

Yes. If we are on the roof for a sweep and the flue needs a cap, we can quote it on the spot and fit it the same visit where we have the right size.
