That pattern changes what ends up in the flue. Long, low burns and wood that came off the block a little too early lay down a sticky tar rather than loose soot, and it builds on the baffle, the top of the firebox and the cool upper section of the flue where the gases slow down. A normal brush skates over it. Left for a second season it hardens into a glaze that only a rotary head with the right attachments will lift.
So a Doreen sweep is a heater service as much as a flue clean. The baffle comes out and is cleaned, the firebox and glass are done, the flue is swept its full length with a rotary head, and the cowl is checked for the litter and mesh clogging that open blocks produce. Block-cut wood that is not quite dry burns cool, and cool smoke leaves tar on the inside of a steel flue instead of dry soot. Tar needs a rotary head and patience to shift, which is why a Doreen sweep is never a two-minute brush from below.

For a heater doing that kind of work, once before the season and once partway through. The deposit from months of long burns is tar, and tar builds into glaze if it is left a full year. If your burning is lighter, we say so and book you once.
