Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Fitzroy

Fitzroy’s Victorian terraces have tall, narrow flues that were never lined and often share a stack with the house next door. FreshDuct finds your flue, sweeps its full length and keeps the soot out of the front room.

Terrace flue with a kink halfway up? Flexible rods and a camera get past it; a straight brush does not.

A long, narrow terrace flue draws hard, so the creosote it lays down over a winter is thin, glazed and stuck to the brick along the whole run. It comes off far more easily in autumn than after another season has baked it on.
Terrace Flue Sweeping

Sweeping the narrow shared flues of Fitzroy terraces

The flues behind a Fitzroy terrace fireplace were built into the party wall, which makes them tall, tight and rarely straight. They dog-leg around the flues from the rooms above and the ones from the house next door, all rising together to a shared stack on the parapet. That geometry is why a terrace draws so well, and also why an ordinary rigid brush stops short a few metres up and leaves the worst of the creosote where the flue bends.

So a Fitzroy sweep starts by confirming which flue is yours, with a camera from the hearth and a smoke check at the top, because on a shared stack the wrong pot is a real possibility. Then flexible rods and a rotary head sized to the narrow bore are worked through every bend to the pot, with the opening sealed and a vacuum running so the soot goes into the machine rather than the hallway.

Terrace interiors are small and close, with the front room a few steps from the street and the furniture rarely far from the fireplace. Drop sheets go down across the whole room, not just the hearth, and the seal on the opening stays in place until the last rod is out. The flue is photographed before and after, and if the camera finds a fallen brick or a nest above a bend, you hear about it before you light anything.

Local Know-How

Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Fitzroy: what is different here

Yours or next door’s

Terrace stacks were often built to carry the flues of two houses. We put a camera up from your hearth and check for smoke at the top before sweeping, so the rods go up your flue and not the neighbour’s, and a shared blockage is found, not guessed at.

Bends the brush cannot reach

Party-wall flues step sideways to clear the rooms above, and a rigid rod set stalls at the first bend. Flexible rods and a rotary head sized to the narrow bore follow the flue round each kink to the pot, which is where the creosote is thickest.

Small rooms, original finishes

A Fitzroy front room may have its original surround, floorboards and cornice, with the sofa a metre from the grate. The room is sheeted end to end, the opening is sealed and the vacuum runs throughout, so the sweep leaves nothing behind but photos.

No soot past the front door

In a terrace there is no side path to carry equipment round, so everything comes through the front door and the hallway. We sheet the route as well as the room, and the vacuum hose is the only thing that leaves the fireplace while the rods are in the flue.

Before and after photos of the flue come with the job, along with an honest word on whether the parapet brickwork or the pots looked worn from the camera. A sweep is a sweep; anything else is quoted separately if you want it.

FAQs

Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Fitzroy — questions answered

Our Fitzroy terrace flue seems to bend halfway up. Can it still be swept properly?

Yes. Most party-wall flues in Fitzroy dog-leg to clear the rooms above, which is exactly why we use flexible rods and a rotary head rather than a rigid brush. The camera confirms the head has passed each bend and reached the pot before we pack up.

How do you know you are sweeping our flue and not the neighbour’s?

A camera goes up from your hearth and we check for smoke at the pots on the shared stack before any rods go in. Once the run is confirmed from your fireplace to its pot, that is the flue that gets swept and photographed, and the neighbour’s is left alone.

How often should a chimney be swept?

Fire authorities recommend an annual sweep before winter. If you burn most nights, burn unseasoned or soft wood, or run a heater on low for long periods, sooner.

Is chimney sweeping messy?

Not with FreshDuct. We lay drop sheets, seal the fireplace opening and use contained, high-power vacuuming so the soot is captured rather than left in your living room.

What is the difference between a sweep and a deep clean?

A standard sweep clears regular soot and light creosote. A deep clean tackles heavy, baked-on or glazed creosote that a normal brush will not shift.
