Chimney Caps & Cowls in Footscray

Many Footscray cottage chimneys have never had a cap, and rain and birds have been using the open flue since the fireplace was shut. FreshDuct fits caps, bird guards and vented caps for closed flues, from the roof, with a photo of the finished job.

Damp patch on the chimney breast of a Footscray cottage? Rain down an open flue is the usual cause, and a cap is the usual fix.

An uncapped flue over a boarded fireplace takes every downpour straight into the brickwork and delivers it as a damp stain on the plaster inside. One cap fitted before winter stops that, and a guard on it keeps the spring nesting season out as well.
Capping Open Flues

Capping the open flues on Footscray's period cottages

The chimneys on Footscray's Victorian and Edwardian cottages were built with a plain terracotta pot or an open brick top and nothing else, and for many of them that is still how they stand. When the fireplace beneath was in daily use the heat kept the flue dry. Now that so many of those fireplaces have been boarded up, the open top is simply a hole in the roof that rain falls into.

The damage shows up indoors as a damp patch or a tide mark on the chimney breast, and in the flue as a wet, mouldy smoke shelf that smells on humid days. Birds add to it. A cottage flue with no cap and no fire is a sheltered place to nest, and a nest built over a dormant flue is what blocks it when someone finally decides to light the fireplace again.

A fireplace you plan to use gets a rain cap with a mesh bird guard, sized to the pot so the draught of a modest cottage flue is not restricted. A fireplace that is staying closed gets a vented cap instead, which keeps the water out while letting the flue breathe so the brickwork does not trap damp. On terraces we identify which pot serves which flue before anything is fitted.

Local Know-How

Chimney Caps & Cowls in Footscray: what is different here

Rain into disused flues

An open pot over a closed-up fireplace has been collecting rain for decades, and it ends up as damp on the chimney breast. A cap fitted from the roof stops the water at the top and lets the stack dry out.

Nesting in cold flues

Birds favour a Footscray cottage flue that never sees a fire. A mesh guard on the cap keeps them out, and if a nest is already there we clear it before the cap goes on rather than sealing it in.

Vented caps for closed fireplaces

A fireplace that will never be lit still needs its flue to breathe. A vented cap keeps rain and birds out but lets air through, so the brick and plaster around a boarded fireplace stay dry through winter.

The right top for the flue's future

We ask first whether the fireplace under the flue is coming back into use or staying closed, because the answer changes the cap. Live flues get a rain cap and bird guard sized for the draught; dead ones get a vented cap that keeps the stack dry.

Cottage chimneys here are usually within reach from the roof, so most caps go on in a single visit, and a photo of the fitted cap comes with the job so you can see it from the ground.

FAQs

Chimney Caps & Cowls in Footscray — questions answered

We never use the fireplace in our Footscray cottage — can you just seal the chimney top?

We would rather cap and vent it than seal it. A fully sealed flue traps moisture in the brick and shows up as damp inside the house. A vented cap keeps rain and birds out while letting the flue breathe, which is what a closed-up Footscray fireplace actually needs.

There is a bird's nest in the flue of our Footscray terrace — will a cap fix it?

A cap with a guard stops the next one, but the nest already there has to come out first. We clear the flue, check it is not blocking a neighbour's flue in a shared stack, and then fit a guarded cap to the right pot so it does not happen again.

Do I really need a chimney cap?

An open flue lets rain, leaves and birds straight in. A cap keeps the flue dry, keeps nests out and, on a wood heater, a spark arrestor stops embers leaving the flue.

Why does my fireplace smoke when it is windy?

Usually a downdraught — wind pushing back down the flue. An anti-downdraught cowl is the normal fix; we confirm the draw with a test before and after.

Can you fit a cap while sweeping?

Yes. If we are on the roof for a sweep and the flue needs a cap, we can quote it on the spot and fit it the same visit where we have the right size.
