Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Moorabbin

Moorabbin’s 1950s and 60s brick homes burn steadily through winter, many through a wood heater slotted into the original open fireplace. FreshDuct sweeps the flue behind the insert as well as the insert itself, and photographs both.

Wood heater fitted into an old Moorabbin fireplace? The brick flue behind it needs sweeping too, not just the heater.

A heater insert in a mid-century fireplace sends smoke into a brick flue that was built for an open fire and is now far too big for it. Smoke cools and creosote falls out on the brick above the insert, where nobody looks. Sweep it before the season, every season.
Mid-Century Flue Sweeps

Sweeping behind the heater in a Moorabbin fireplace

The typical Moorabbin fireplace has had two lives. It started as an open brick fire in a post-war home, and at some point a slow-combustion heater or a fan-forced insert was pushed into the opening. That leaves a heater venting into a masonry flue three or four times the size it needs. The smoke slows, cools and drops its creosote on the brick just above the insert, on the smoke shelf and up the first metre or two of the flue.

That is the section a heater-only sweep misses. Unless the insert is pulled forward or the flue is reached from the pot on the roof, the deposit sits there year after year, and in Moorabbin it sits damp: enough sea air reaches the suburb to keep it from ever drying to a dust. What builds up is a wet, tarry layer that is harder to shift the longer it is left, and it is the fuel a chimney fire starts on.

So a Moorabbin sweep is planned around the appliance. Where the insert has a flue kit we brush that, then reach the masonry above it from the roof. Where it vents straight into the brick we pull it forward, sweep the full brick flue with a rotary head, vacuum the shelf and put the heater back. The basic clean is $169, and the before and after photos show the brick, not just the steel.

Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Moorabbin: what is different here

Creosote above the insert

A heater in an oversized brick flue drops its creosote just above the appliance and on the smoke shelf. We reach that section from the roof or by pulling the insert forward, rather than sweeping the heater and calling the flue done.

Damp deposit near the bay

Sea air reaches Moorabbin and keeps flue deposit tacky rather than dusty. A rotary brush sized to the flue, worked the full length, lifts it; a hand brush from the grate does not. The camera confirms the walls are clean before we pack up.

Decades of steady burning

Many of these fireplaces have burned every winter since the 1960s. The build-up is layered, and where a section has glazed we say so on camera and explain what a deep clean involves before anyone agrees to it.

The whole flue, not just the heater

Drop sheets go down, the insert is protected or pulled forward, and the brick flue is swept from the shelf to the pot with the vacuum running. The heater is brushed, vacuumed and put back where it was.

The camera goes up afterwards to show the brick is clean, and the cap gets a look while we are on the roof. If nothing else is needed, that is what you hear.

FAQs

Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Moorabbin — questions answered

The wood heater in our Moorabbin house sits inside the old fireplace — does the chimney still need sweeping?

Yes, and it is the part most often skipped. The heater sends smoke into a brick flue far larger than it needs, so creosote drops out just above the insert and on the smoke shelf. We sweep that brick section as well as the heater’s own flue kit and show you both on camera.

How often should a Moorabbin fireplace that burns most winter nights be swept?

Every year before winter, and a mid-winter check if you are burning most nights or the wood is not fully seasoned. Near the bay the deposit stays damp and tarry rather than flaking off, so it builds faster than it looks like it should.

How often should a chimney be swept?

Fire authorities recommend an annual sweep before winter. If you burn most nights, burn unseasoned or soft wood, or run a heater on low for long periods, sooner.

Is chimney sweeping messy?

Not with FreshDuct. We lay drop sheets, seal the fireplace opening and use contained, high-power vacuuming so the soot is captured rather than left in your living room.

What is the difference between a sweep and a deep clean?

A standard sweep clears regular soot and light creosote. A deep clean tackles heavy, baked-on or glazed creosote that a normal brush will not shift.
