Annual heater service before winter

Ducted gas heater service in Melbourne: checked, cleaned and CO tested

A ducted gas heater sits idle for six months, then gets asked to run for hours a day. An annual service checks the burner, flame sensor, ignition, fan, filters, return air and flue, and every service includes a carbon monoxide test. Ducted gas heater service from $300 with no call-out fee, and you pay after the job.

Signs your ducted heater is overdue for a service

Any one of these is worth a call. They rarely fix themselves.

It has been more than a year since anyone opened the heater cabinet
A burning or dusty smell that hangs around long after start-up
The house takes noticeably longer to warm up than last winter
The heater starts, stops and restarts every few minutes
Soot or dark marks around the outlets or the heater cabinet
The return air grille is grey with dust, or the filter has never been changed

What the annual service actually checks

The technician opens the heater, runs it, and works through the parts that decide whether it lights reliably, heats evenly and burns cleanly:

  • Burner and flame. The burner is inspected and cleaned, and the flame is checked while the heater runs. A lazy, yellow or lifting flame points to a combustion problem.
  • Heat exchanger (visual). The heat exchanger keeps the combustion gases separate from the air blown through your house. It is inspected visually for cracks, rust-through and scorching wherever it can be seen.
  • Flame sensor and ignition. A thin film on the flame sensor is enough to make a heater light and then shut down. The sensor is cleaned and the ignition sequence is watched from start to steady flame.
  • Fan and motor. The circulating fan is checked for dust build-up, bearing noise and correct speed.
  • Filter and return air. The return air filter is checked and cleaned, and the return air path is checked for blockages. A choked filter is a common reason a heater overheats and cuts out.
  • Flue. The flue is checked for blockages, damage and secure joints.
  • Controller and outlets. The wall controller is tested through a full heating cycle, and airflow is checked at the outlets.

You get a plain report of what was found, with before and after photos. If the service turns up a worn or failed part, the technician inspects and quotes before any work, and you approve first.

The carbon monoxide test, explained

Carbon monoxide is produced when gas does not burn cleanly. It has no colour and no smell, and in a home it shows up as headaches, drowsiness or nausea that ease when you leave the house. In a ducted gas heater the usual causes are a cracked heat exchanger, a blocked or disconnected flue, or a dirty burner.

Every ducted gas heater service includes a carbon monoxide test. With the heater running, the technician tests for carbon monoxide at the heater and in the warm air coming out of the outlets. If carbon monoxide is found, the heater is turned off and not left running, and you are told exactly why and what it would take to make it safe.

A battery carbon monoxide alarm near the bedrooms is a sensible extra layer for any home with gas heating. Our guide to carbon monoxide and ducted heating covers the symptoms and the warning signs in more detail.

When to book, and why before winter

The sensible time to service a ducted gas heater in Melbourne is autumn, before the first cold snap. A heater that has sat idle since spring can collect dust on the burner, the flame sensor and the fan, and the first hard run of the year is when a weak part tends to give out. Booking ahead also means you choose the day.

A short burning-dust smell for the first few minutes of the season is normal. A smell that lingers, a heater that cycles on and off, soot marks, a yellow flame or a gas bill that keeps climbing are not, and they are worth a service whatever the month. Our annual service guide explains what each of those signs usually means.

Service, clean, repair or replace: which one you need

A service looks after the heater itself: burner, sensors, fan, flue and the carbon monoxide test. That is this page.

A duct clean deals with the ducts, outlets and return air path, where years of dust collect and get blown back into the rooms. Our ducted heating cleaning in Melbourne covers that.

A repair is for a heater with a fault: one that will not light, blows cold, shows an error code or keeps shutting down. Our ducted heating repairs page covers faults. You get a quote to approve before any work starts.

Replacement comes up when the heat exchanger has failed, the heater is very old, parts can no longer be sourced, or it has been turned off as unsafe. Our ducted heating replacement page sets out the options, and our ducted heating service cost guide explains what a service includes and what changes the price.

What you actually get

What a ducted gas heater service includes

Ducted gas heater service from $300 including the carbon monoxide test. Any repair the service turns up is quoted separately and only goes ahead once you approve.

Included as standard

  • Burner inspected and cleaned, flame checked while running
  • Heat exchanger inspected visually wherever it can be seen
  • Flame sensor cleaned and the ignition sequence checked
  • Fan and motor checked for dust, noise and speed
  • Return air filter checked and cleaned, return air path checked
  • Flue checked for blockages, damage and secure joints

  • Controller tested through a full heating cycle, with before and after photos

And the things we will not do

  • Push a new heater when a service or a repair will do
How it works

From booked to ready for winter

1. Book a time

Tell us the brand, roughly how old the heater is, and whether it sits in the roof, under the floor or outside.

2. Service and CO test

Burner, sensor, ignition, fan, filter, return air, and flue checked, then the carbon monoxide test.

3. Plain report

What was found, with photos. If a part needs replacing, the technician inspects and quotes before any work, and you approve first.

Run through a full heating cycle before we leave. You pay after the job.

Ducted gas heater service questions, answered plainly

How much is a ducted gas heater service?

A ducted gas heater service is from $300 including the carbon monoxide test. There is no call-out fee and you pay after the job. If the service finds a part that needs replacing, the technician inspects and quotes before any work, and you approve first.

How often should a ducted gas heater be serviced?

Once a year is the usual recommendation, ideally in autumn before you start using it every day. Your heater manual may set its own schedule.

What does the carbon monoxide test involve?

With the heater running, the technician tests for carbon monoxide at the heater and in the air coming from the outlets. If any is found, the heater is turned off, not left running, and you are told why.

Is a heater service the same as duct cleaning?

No. The service looks after the heater: burner, sensors, fan, flue and the carbon monoxide test. Duct cleaning deals with the ducts, outlets and return air. Many households book both before winter.

Can you service a heater that has stopped working?

Yes, but that is a repair visit rather than a service. Book through our ducted heating repairs page and tell us what the heater is doing. You approve the quote before any work starts.

Which brands do you service?

Brivis, Braemar, Bonaire, Rinnai, Vulcan and the other ducted gas heaters found in Melbourne homes, from older units to current high-efficiency models.

When do I pay?

After the service is done and the heater has run through a full cycle. There is no call-out fee.
