Chimney Caps & Cowls in Essendon

A period Essendon chimney may carry three or four pots, and each one is a way in for rain, birds and leaf litter. FreshDuct fits caps to working flues, vented caps to disused ones, and cowls where a tall stack smokes back, from the roof and photographed.

Pot on an Essendon chimney with nothing on top? Every shower is going straight down to a fireplace or a bricked-up throat.

An uncapped pot on a period stack lets rain run down bare brick all winter and lets birds nest in it all summer. Capping every flue in a villa, not only the one you use, keeps the whole chimney dry.
Every Pot Capped

Capping the pots on a period Essendon chimney

Essendon's Edwardian and interwar chimneys were finished with terracotta pots, one per flue, and very few of them were ever capped. That was fine while every fireplace in the house was lit daily and the flues stayed warm and dry. Now most of those fireplaces are ornamental, the flues are cold, and an open pot on a tall stack is collecting rain, leaf litter from the street trees and the occasional starling nest.

We cap each pot according to what is under it. The working fireplace gets a rain cap with a bird guard that keeps the flue dry without holding back the draw. Disused flues get a vented cap, because sealing a period flue completely traps damp in the brick and shows up as staining on the chimney breast. Where a heater has been fitted into an old fireplace, its steel flue gets a cowl matched to the liner.

Tall stacks on two-storey Essendon villas draw well in most weather, but a fireplace that smokes on a northerly usually has a downdraught problem at the terminal rather than a flue problem below. An anti-downdraught cowl is the normal fix and we test the draw with it fitted. Caps and cowls are fixed with fasteners that will not rust and photographed from the roof so you can see them seated.

Local Know-How

Chimney Caps & Cowls in Essendon: what is different here

Several pots, one visit

A villa chimney with four pots needs four terminals, and they are not all the same. We size each cap to its pot on the roof and fit the working and disused flues differently, so the stack stays dry and the brick can still breathe.

Nests and street-tree litter

Essendon's tree-lined streets drop leaves into open pots, and birds move into a cold flue within a season. A cap with a guard stops both, and we clear whatever is already in the flue before it goes on.

Downdraught on tall stacks

A fireplace that smokes back only when the wind is from one quarter has a terminal problem. An anti-downdraught cowl fitted to that pot usually settles it, and we check the draw with the fire lit rather than assuming.

Sized to each pot, fixed to last

We measure every pot on the stack, match a cap, vented cap or cowl to each flue and its fireplace, and fix them with corrosion-resistant fasteners from the roof, with harness work where the villa's height calls for it.

Photos of the finished terminals come with the job, so you can see each pot capped, sealed and sitting square from above without going anywhere near a ladder or a roof yourself.

FAQs

Chimney Caps & Cowls in Essendon — questions answered

Should the unused fireplaces in our Essendon villa have their chimney pots capped too?

Yes, but with a vented cap rather than a solid one. An open pot lets rain run down the bare brick of a cold flue and shows up as damp on the chimney breast, while a sealed pot traps moisture inside. A vented cap keeps rain and birds out and lets the flue breathe.

Our Essendon fireplace only smokes when the wind comes from the north. Will a cowl fix that?

Almost certainly, provided the flue is clear. Smoke that comes back only on one wind direction is a downdraught at the terminal, and an anti-downdraught cowl on that pot is the normal fix. We confirm the flue first, fit the cowl, and test the draw before we leave.

Do I really need a chimney cap?

An open flue lets rain, leaves and birds straight in. A cap keeps the flue dry, keeps nests out and, on a wood heater, a spark arrestor stops embers leaving the flue.

Why does my fireplace smoke when it is windy?

Usually a downdraught — wind pushing back down the flue. An anti-downdraught cowl is the normal fix; we confirm the draw with a test before and after.

Can you fit a cap while sweeping?

Yes. If we are on the roof for a sweep and the flue needs a cap, we can quote it on the spot and fit it the same visit where we have the right size.
