Chimney Caps & Cowls in Heidelberg

An open period flue under Heidelberg’s big trees takes in rain, leaves and nesting birds all year. FreshDuct fits caps and guarded cowls that suit a Victorian or Federation chimney, sealed to the crown and photographed from the roof.

Chimney pot with nothing on top? Every shower is going straight down onto the smoke shelf and into the brick.

Unlined brick soaks up whatever falls down the flue, and on a shaded block that water has nowhere to go. A cap keeps the rain and the leaf litter out, which is most of the battle for a period chimney near the river.
Caps for Old Stacks

Capping a period chimney under Heidelberg’s mature trees

Most Heidelberg chimneys went a century without a cap. Rain fell down the open pot, soaked into the smoke shelf and the brick behind the firebox, and slowly worked on the mortar. Add mature trees overhanging the roof, as on so many blocks running down to the river, and the flue also becomes a catch for leaves, twigs and whatever the birds bring in. The result is a damp chimney that draws poorly and needs clearing every time it is lit.

The fix is a cap, but on a period stack it has to be the right one. Federation and Victorian pots come in odd sizes and shapes, so the cap is measured to the pot or the flue opening rather than taken from a standard range, fixed with corrosion-resistant fasteners and sealed so the crown stays dry. It should keep water and leaves out without narrowing the draw, and on a heritage street it should look as though it belongs.

A guarded cowl goes on where birds have been a problem, and where a flue is kept but no longer used we fit a vented cap that stops the rain while letting the stack breathe. Fireplaces that smoke back when the wind comes over the trees get an anti-downdraught cowl, and the draw is tested with it fitted before we leave.

Local Know-How

Chimney Caps & Cowls in Heidelberg: what is different here

Rain into unlined brick

An uncapped period flue lets every shower onto the smoke shelf and into porous brick, and under shade it stays wet. A properly sealed rain cap is the simplest thing that can be done for a damp Heidelberg chimney.

Leaves and nests from the canopy

Mature trees over a Heidelberg roof send leaf litter and nesting birds into an open flue every season. A cap with a guard closes it off, and whatever has already gone in is cleared before it goes on.

Made to fit a period pot

Victorian and Federation chimney pots are rarely a standard size. We measure the pot or the opening and fit a cap or cowl that sits square and sealed, in a finish that does not look out of place on a heritage roof.

Measured, Sealed, Photographed

Fitted to the pot, not near enough

We measure the pot or the flue opening on site, choose a cap or cowl that suits the fireplace and the problem, whether that is rain, leaves, birds or downdraught, and fix it from the roof with corrosion-resistant fasteners, sealed to the crown.

The finished cap is photographed from the roof so you can see it sits square and sealed. If the pot or crown needs repair before a cap will hold, we tell you that before fitting anything.

FAQs

Chimney Caps & Cowls in Heidelberg — questions answered

Will a cap on our Heidelberg chimney stop the damp in the fireplace?

If the water is coming down the open flue, yes, and on a treed block near the river that is very often the case. If the damp is coming through the flashing or the crown instead, a cap will not fix it, so we check from the roof and say which before fitting one.

Our Heidelberg chimney pot is an odd shape. Can you still fit a cap?

Yes. Period pots are measured on site and the cap or cowl is chosen or made to suit, fixed square and sealed rather than forced on. We photograph it from the roof so you can see it fits without going up yourself.

Do I really need a chimney cap?

An open flue lets rain, leaves and birds straight in. A cap keeps the flue dry, keeps nests out and, on a wood heater, a spark arrestor stops embers leaving the flue.

Why does my fireplace smoke when it is windy?

Usually a downdraught — wind pushing back down the flue. An anti-downdraught cowl is the normal fix; we confirm the draw with a test before and after.

Can you fit a cap while sweeping?

Yes. If we are on the roof for a sweep and the flue needs a cap, we can quote it on the spot and fit it the same visit where we have the right size.
