Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Heidelberg

Heidelberg’s Victorian, Federation and Edwardian homes above the Yarra flats still burn in their original open fireplaces. FreshDuct sweeps the unlined brick flue to the top, empties a smoke shelf that may not have been touched in decades, and photographs the lot.

Fireplace smells of old smoke on a damp day? That is soot held in the brick, and a proper sweep is what shifts it.

A Victorian chimney around Warringal has a smoke shelf deep enough to hold years of fallen soot, and a sweep that stops at the throat leaves it there. We empty the shelf, brush the full height and show you the flue on camera.
Period Fireplace Sweeps

Sweeping an original flue in one of Heidelberg’s older homes

The fireplaces around Warringal and Burgundy Street mostly sit in brick chimneys that were never lined, in houses that range from Victorian through Federation and Edwardian to the interwar bungalows built later. The older the house, the taller the flue and the deeper the smoke shelf behind the throat, and it is the shelf that a quick sweep misses: it can hold years of fallen soot and whatever the trees have dropped in, sitting a metre above the grate.

So the sweep is done from the fireplace with the opening sealed and a contained vacuum running. Rods and a rotary head sized to the flue go the full height to the pot, adding lengths on a tall Victorian stack, and the shelf is vacuumed out rather than brushed over. A shorter interwar bungalow flue is a quicker job, but it gets the same head, the same vacuum and the same camera pass afterwards.

Trees are the other reason a Heidelberg flue needs clearing. Leaf litter and twigs drop in over summer and settle on the shelf or lodge partway up, and a nest is not unusual on a chimney that has stood idle. The top of the flue is checked and cleared, the draw is confirmed, and the before and after photos show you exactly what came out.

Local Know-How

Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Heidelberg: what is different here

The smoke shelf nobody empties

Behind the throat of a Victorian or Federation fireplace is a shelf that catches everything falling down the flue. A sweep that brushes past it leaves years of soot and litter in place, so we vacuum it out and photograph it empty.

Litter from mature trees

Heidelberg’s big old trees overhang plenty of chimneys, and what they drop ends up on the smoke shelf or wedged in the flue. Clearing the top and the shelf is part of every sweep here, not an extra.

Water in the firebox is not the sweep

Heidelberg flues sit under shade and near the river, and a damp firebox after rain usually means the flashing or crown, not the soot. We look at both from the roof during the sweep and tell you if a repair is worth quoting.

Careful in Old Rooms

A period sitting room left as we found it

Federation and Edwardian fireplaces come with tiled hearths, timber mantels and often the original grate. Drop sheets cover the floor, the opening is sealed, and the vacuum runs from the first rod to the last so the soot goes into the machine and not onto the furniture.

The camera shows the flue before and after and the photos come with the job. If the brick is sound and the flue is clear we say so, and if the damp is coming from the roof rather than the weather we tell you that too.

FAQs

Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Heidelberg — questions answered

Our Heidelberg fireplace has not been used for years. Does it need sweeping before we light it?

Yes, and a look up it first. An idle flue on a treed block often holds leaf litter or a nest, and the old soot on unlined brick is still there. We clear it, sweep the full height and check on camera that it is open before you light anything.

Why does our Heidelberg chimney smell when it rains?

Damp air draws the smell out of soot that has soaked into unlined brick, and on a shaded block near the river that happens often. A full sweep back to clean brick usually removes it; if water is actually getting into the flue, we spot that on camera and say so.

How often should a chimney be swept?

Fire authorities recommend an annual sweep before winter. If you burn most nights, burn unseasoned or soft wood, or run a heater on low for long periods, sooner.

Is chimney sweeping messy?

Not with FreshDuct. We lay drop sheets, seal the fireplace opening and use contained, high-power vacuuming so the soot is captured rather than left in your living room.

What is the difference between a sweep and a deep clean?

A standard sweep clears regular soot and light creosote. A deep clean tackles heavy, baked-on or glazed creosote that a normal brush will not shift.
