Ivanhoe's Federation and Edwardian chimneys were built well, and a century of leaf litter, shade and weather is what has worn them. FreshDuct rebuilds and repoints deteriorated masonry to match, replaces flashing that litter has rusted, and relines flues, quoted after photographs.
Leaves piled behind the stack every autumn? That is where the flashing rusts, and the ceiling stain follows a few winters later.
The chimneys on Ivanhoe's Federation and Edwardian homes were built to a standard, with good brick and pots set into a solid crown, and most of the lower stack is still sound a century on. What has worn is the top. The crown has cracked, the mortar in the top few courses has fretted back, and a brick or two on the weather side has lost its face. Restoring that top, on sound brick below, is the usual Ivanhoe job.
At the roofline the problem is the leaves. They collect against the back of the stack and in the flashing gutter, hold water against the metal and the mortar, and rust the galvanised flashing through from underneath. The first sign indoors is usually a damp patch high on the chimney breast or a tide mark on a ceiling, and by then the flashing has been leaking through a few winters.
Every repair begins with photographs of the stack, crown, flashing and flue, and a quote for what has actually failed. Deteriorated top courses come down to sound brick and go back on the original line, joints are repointed in a mortar matched to the Federation brick, spalled bricks are replaced with matching salvage, and flashing is replaced in a material that will not rust under leaf litter. Where the camera finds open joints inside an unlined flue, a stainless liner is quoted.
Top-course rebuilds, matched repointing, crown and flashing work and relining for the fine period chimneys on Ivanhoe's treed blocks, photographed before and after.
When the crown has gone and the top courses have fretted loose, patching the joints will not hold. We take the deteriorated courses down to sound brick, rebuild them to the original height and detail, and finish with a crown that sheds water clear of the stack.
Leaves piling behind an Ivanhoe stack keep the flashing wet year round and rust it from below. We clear the gutter, replace the flashing in a corrosion-resistant material and dress it in properly, so litter can sit on it without harm.
Ivanhoe's Federation and Edwardian chimneys are part of what makes the street. Repointing is toned and struck to the original, and replacement bricks are matched for colour and size so the repaired stack reads as it always did.
Real photos from Melbourne jobs — not stock, not staged.

A Federation stack whose top has gone is not a stack that needs replacing. We rebuild the top courses and crown on the sound brick below, repoint what is worth keeping, and leave the rest of the chimney as it was built.
Work is done from the roof with harness access where the pitch and the trees allow, and the after photos show the repointed joints, the rebuilt crown and the new flashing in place.

Usually not. On a well-built Federation stack the failure is confined to the top courses and the crown, with the brickwork below still sound. We take the loose courses down to good brick, rebuild them to the original line and detail and finish with a new crown, so the stack keeps its height and its look.
Yes. We match the mortar colour and joint profile to the original and repoint by the course rather than the odd joint, and replacement bricks are chosen for colour and size before anything is cut out. From the street the repaired stack should look like the same chimney.
White staining, crumbling mortar, loose or missing bricks, rust marks on the roof, water in the firebox after rain, or smoke seeping into rooms are the usual signs. A photographed inspection tells you what is cosmetic and what is not.
Yes — stainless steel liners for cracked or unlined flues on open fireplaces and wood heaters, quoted firm after a camera inspection. Gas flue work goes through the licensed gas specialists we arrange.
Often, with roof access and harness work. Taller or unstable stacks need scaffold, and we tell you before quoting rather than after.
