Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Ivanhoe

Federation and Edwardian homes on Ivanhoe's treed blocks have original unlined flues that collect creosote from below and leaf litter from above. FreshDuct sweeps the flue end to end, clears the terminal, and photographs both.

Ivanhoe fireplace slow to light after summer? Leaf litter on the smoke shelf is the usual reason, and a sweep clears it.

Under Ivanhoe's canopy a flue never quite dries out, so the soot in it stays damp and clings, and the leaves that drop in over summer sit on top of it. By the first cold night the flue is half blocked and the fire smokes.
Under the Canopy

Sweeping an Ivanhoe flue that the trees have been filling

Ivanhoe's Federation and Edwardian homes sit on big blocks under mature trees, on the hills that run down to the Yarra from Upper Heidelberg Road. The chimneys are well built and mostly original, which means an unlined brick flue and a terracotta pot. What sets them apart from the same chimney in a bare street is the canopy. Branches overhang the stack, shade keeps it damp, and every autumn the pot fills with leaves.

That combination makes for a particular kind of dirty flue. Creosote from the fire builds on the bare brick as it does anywhere, but here it stays damp and tacky rather than drying and flaking, so it holds on and thickens. Above it, leaf litter that has blown or dropped in over summer collects on the smoke shelf and at any bend, and the two together can leave a flue that lights reluctantly and smokes on a still evening.

So an Ivanhoe sweep works from both ends. From the fireplace the opening is sealed and a rotary head sized to the flue takes the tacky deposit back to brick, with a contained vacuum running the whole time. From the roof, where the pitch allows, we clear the pot and the top of the flue of litter and check whether a guard would keep it out next season. The camera records the flue before and after.

Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Ivanhoe: what is different here

Litter on the smoke shelf

Leaves that drop into an open Ivanhoe pot land on the smoke shelf, where they sit against the soot and hold moisture. We vacuum the shelf out rather than brushing over it, because a damp mat of leaves and creosote is where a flue fire finds its fuel.

Tacky deposit in the shade

A flue kept damp by overhanging trees holds its creosote as a soft, clinging layer instead of a dry crust. It needs a rotary head worked the full length, and the camera has to show clean brick before the sweep is finished.

Well-made Federation stacks

Ivanhoe's period chimneys were properly built, often with two flues in the one stack. We sweep the flue in use, check the other for litter and nests, and add rods until the brush reaches the pot on a tall stack.

Cleared from the pot to the hearth

The living room is protected first: drop sheets over the boards and rugs, the fireplace opening sealed, and a vacuum running from the first rod to the last. Nothing that comes out of an Ivanhoe flue ends up on the furniture.

Photos from the camera and from the roof show you the flue clean and the pot clear. If the trees are dropping enough litter to block it again by next winter, we say so and quote a guard, and nothing more than that.

FAQs

Chimney Sweep & Cleaning in Ivanhoe — questions answered

Our Ivanhoe fireplace has not been used since last winter and now it smokes into the room. Could leaves be the cause?

Very likely. An open pot under Ivanhoe's trees collects litter all summer, and a blocked smoke shelf or a partly blocked flue will push smoke back into the room on the first fire. A sweep clears it from both ends, and a guard on the pot stops it happening again.

How often does a fireplace on a treed block in Ivanhoe need sweeping?

Once a year before winter for a fireplace used most cold nights, and it pays to book it in autumn after the leaves have finished dropping rather than before. That way the litter and the season's creosote come out together and the flue starts winter clear.

How often should a chimney be swept?

Fire authorities recommend an annual sweep before winter. If you burn most nights, burn unseasoned or soft wood, or run a heater on low for long periods, sooner.

Is chimney sweeping messy?

Not with FreshDuct. We lay drop sheets, seal the fireplace opening and use contained, high-power vacuuming so the soot is captured rather than left in your living room.

What is the difference between a sweep and a deep clean?

A standard sweep clears regular soot and light creosote. A deep clean tackles heavy, baked-on or glazed creosote that a normal brush will not shift.
